ITV News studio issues

I think the argument is that decamping to Leeds is not something that could be done easily in this particular set of circumstances. Plenty of ways they could get on air though. With some clever camera angles & framing, they could use the 5 News set if it really came down to it.

Or more likely just come from the newsroom. They also have their digital set which they record online content in which is more than sufficient for backup.

Of course the real issue is the gallery, not the studio.

That could be a deliberate shutdown by the building management - the Fire Brigade's decision to declare a Major Incident suggests that they are not going to be in a position to turn out quickly if somebody gets stuck in the lift, and in the current weather circumstances that could be a health issue for the unfortunate person(s) inside a hot lift cabin.

I know my place of work shut the lifts down during a fire service strike a number of years ago.

Indeed, and that's why they do have a spare control room/gallery. PCR1 is the main ITV control room but they have PCR2 as a back-up. Then there's PCR5 for Channel 5 and PCR6 for Channel 4.

Are the galleries interchangeable to any degree?  For example, could the studio be patched through to C5's gallery, PCR5?

Although in dire circumstances at GIR one assumes there's another option: the GMB studio.

Do Central still have the studio space once used for CITV continuity?

Millbank is the other back up in London, although of course it can't do several programmes at the same time.

I guess if things really hit the fan, find a suitable OB venue, and sat truck/Live-U or similar into Leeds

It's impressive that ITN were able to get the Evening News up and running with only minor bugs. I'm assuming it was an isolated incident rather a wider ITN issue.

I have to say I have been very impressed with ITN recently. We remember the power failure they had in April, meant producing the national bulletins from Leeds? Excellent job they did.

I do feel lumping ITV News London into the same set as ITV national news will cause problems if the studio has a massive fault. We can see the cost savings yes, but surely ITV News London having its own studio would not be too expensive.

They've been in the same studio about a decade now (it was towards the end of the yellow era).  That's over 2500 editions.  The amount of times it has been potentially an issue can be counted on one hand, and bring in separate studios wouldn't have necessarily prevented the issue either as we saw earlier in the year when C4 and C5 had to broadcast from elsewhere too.

Also ITV do have that secondary studio used for online content which could probably be used as a backup if required - though I get the impression it's easier to do an OB from anywhere in the world than relocate elsewhere within Grays Inn Studios.

The entirety of GIR is receiving an upgrade to bring it up to modern times- as a result of this ITN are able to do the same.

As with any upgrade and with projects the size of these, it’ll take time.

We already know both itv and channel 4 newsrooms are receiving long overdue upgrades.

My understanding is that ITN will be 100% over IP by end of year.

Yep, everything basically becomes packets of data rather than audio or video signals.  Much more flexibility and theoretically means any source in the building can be made available anywhere else with no manual/physical patching or intervention required.

In broadcast, if you've a major building like the Bauer or Global facilities, you can effectively access a mic in the Heart studio in the Classic FM one, for example - every desk can pick up every single source in the building.
