So the fact that they're randomly using gradients does not surprise me, as they're probably trying to "innovate" while doing it badly.
I don't think it's random. As you know the ENTIRE BBC's using gradients now.

PS I can't see why iPlayer/Sounds/Sport have coloured text and a black background with channels using plain black text without a background

PPS Didn't even notice the use of the Wimbledon gradient rather than the Open gradient.
It highlights the difference between the services and the channels. It's a carryover of the "Watch on iPlayer" design we see online.

Listing "The 150th Open" four times surely breaks one of the most basic rules of designing captions. Easy enough to change the captions to "5 Live", "Highlights", "On Demand" to avoid repetition.
P.S. Have they trimmed half an hour off the BBC highlights this year - sure it used to get a two hour slot?

They have for the first 3 days but I think it is down to the fact BBC have so much on this weekend with Women's Euros, First Night of the Proms etc. Sunday is 2 hours from 8.15pm-10.15pm so hope it is just for this year.
On the new BBC Sport graphics, I don't think they are that bad, not perfect but I remember many complaints about the last set when the BBC introduced them, I remember a whole segment on points of view saying the last set were terrible and singled out Final Score graphics as a downgrade.
Having seen a bit more of it, my general impression is that while not awful, it does feel like a bit of a step down from the previous graphics. It's also quite a departure from the general trend in sports graphics in recent years, which the last set was a part of, so it's probably taking a bit more getting used to. And of course, there's still a lot more to see when the football season starts.

They're also behind a lot of other sports graphics that have been very well received. Almost as if they're a service provider that does what the client wants.

Yep. I like these graphics. And I’m not being forgiving or courteous, I genuinely like this design. Why? It is very expansive. More expansive than the previous design. The colored gradients give off a blast of individuality, and the sliding up animation is reminiscent of the rest of the BBC’s brand design. I honestly think that, given some time, the design will come around to most people here. We did it for the previous look.

I have to agree; I rather like the new package.
It's a little more 'bulky' than the previous iterations but they're doing some interesting stuff with colours which was one of the stated aims of chameleon, certainly more so than some of the other divisions.

I think the new graphics look nice! It's more in line with the other channels and services branding.

I hadn’t thought about this but I wonder if Final Score will get revamp with gradients everywhere when it returns (is it next week?), that’ll be a chat for somewhere else though
