Well I'm sorry to say but Anthony is one of the worst announcers BBC Television has ever had, just awful. The only decent announcers left are Dean Lydiate, Matthew Jackson, Duncan Newmarch, Delroy Haynes, Natalie Jaque and Emily Chiswell.

I'm getting a bit fed up with this rather toxic attitude you appear to be showing. If you're going to make a comment about this, would you care to explain why you think Anthony is awful?

It's long surprised me that the BBC Sounds audio ident wasn't made with a range of voices. It would seem comparatively very simple and cheap to have a huge variety of people spouting the "Music, Radio, Podcasts" line, randomly assigned to each show. You could even drop in some characteristic celebrity "BBC voices" for a bit of fun. It's curious that they've chosen to stick with a single Southern-accented female version for everything* when it seems such an easy fix, but to go to all this effort for a few hours of BBC One.

*At least as far as I've heard recently - happy to be corrected.

The latter although I imagine it'll be used strategically too. The media planners will have all sorts of data as to what appeals to who and who watches what and where they are. The ability to promote different things to different parts of the country is very useful. 

So, theoretically, could the Midlands be switched between South and North from time to time? I'm not suggesting that it would happen for individual junctions, but if there was a big push for a particular show on the North feed which the planners wanted to target to the Midlands too?

Even 25 years ago Channel 5 had the ability to target an individual transmitter, and any configuration of transmitters they wished with bespoke content. They had 4 main, and 4 standby D-Sat feeds, that routinely were used to provide 4 macro ad regions, but it was all instantly re configurable I think ?

I think the only time it was used in anger, was to run a barker on new transmitters while they were in test transmission mode.

Ironically, I don't think they have anything like that flexibility today !

So far it feels like BBC1 North is much more for the benefit of the BBC marketing department than it is for the viewer.

I'm not sure it was instantly reconfigurable but that's essentially how it worked. There were 4 feeds of Channel 5 and their playout area was set up for 4 advertising regions. They were distributed on 2 satellites (2 on each) and the transmitter sites could use any of the 4 for their feed. 
They were used to create advertising regions but theoretically they could reconfigure in any combination they wanted. 

That was the original set up anyway, two things changed - firstly a storm wiped out the feed to Croydon taking it off air in London for a while one evening, so a fibre feed was put in for that one transmitter, I don't think it was given a new region though. 

The other change was that it was the first terrestrial channel to be carried on Astra, IIRC there was a test signal on that in the early days that identified it as Region 5, so presumably they expanded their playout to do that. 

But yes as you say they don't have that ability any more, it seems to be a single national service
