Speculation mounting once more of a potential general election. Confirmed that Kier Starmer will table vote of no confidence if Boris stays on as caretaker. A win for Labour and the opposition in that event would force a general election by default. Another theory doing the rounds that Boris is creating a cabinet of loyalists in the hope he can ride it out through the summer recess and let the heat come out of it before attempting to cling on to power once the dust settles. Extraordinary stuff.

According to Mark Elliott (a professor of Law at Cambridge and a constitutional scholar) a VONC doesn't automatically lead to a GE if passed:

The process is:
1) VONC Passes

2) Government is removed and PM ejected

3) HM looks to see if anyone else can command the confidence of the house, and if so appoints them as PM and asks them to form a government

4) Only if #3 fails is parliament dissolved and a GE called

So Tories voting for a VONC aren't voting for an immediate GE if they believe they have someone who can command the confidence of the house, even on a temporary basis while they have a contest. They would instead be voting for a speedy way of ejecting Boris.

Elliott puts this forwards as the 'proper' constitutional mechanism for ejecting Boris now if he won't go of his own accord.
