I sometimes forget how good an anchor Paula Newton is but she really is excellent tonight covering for Richard Quest on Quest Means Business and excels on a night like tonight with plenty of news around.
It's a shame she never seems to have gained a proper show of her own - though maybe she prefers it that way.

Pleasantly surprised to see CNNI do its own thing and dump ‘The Lead’ simulcast for continued coverage of the events in Westminster with Isa Soares & Bianca Nobilo. Both Isa and Bianca have been two of the rising stars on CNNI and have been doing an excellent job this evening.

Also very pleasant to have extra London hours this European morning with Max Foster with Rosemary Church in Atlanta. First two hours were with Lynda Kinkade, wonder if we’ll have someone else take over after Max from London instead of Early Start.

Apologies for the double post but for two days in a row it seems like the old CNN intl is back! Excellent rolling coverage of Shinzo Abe’s shooting. I didn’t have the telly on early enough but I assume they opted out of Don Lemon with Lynda Kinkade earlier than usually scheduled, makes for a change from the usual pooling of coverage and forcing simplified coverage on CNN US to intl viewers. Similarly, was pleasantly surprised yesterday that CNN intl and Domestic coverage stayed separate with reporters hopping between the two networks.

It seems like they made Domestic join CNNi for continued coverage the Abe's shooting. But the sad state of affairs of CNN's cost-cutting has been pretty evident here as they had to go to Beijing and I think Hong Kong or Taipei to find correspondents to cover the assignment. From what I recall, Tokyo used to be a major broadcast hub for US networks. So to seek manpower from elsewhere tells you what you need to know.

I spoke too soon… cutting to Early Start and not up to date on the facts, Abe has passed away… France 24, BBC and of course NHK already on the story by the top of the hour.

To be fair, CNN was tossing between Blake Essig in Tokyo and Selina Wang (in Beijing) and Will Ripley (in Taipei) who both spent some time being based in Tokyo, but yes, they are spread pretty thinly compared to yesterday’s Boris coverage.

Max is back on CNNi preempting Early Start. And Nic Robertson, who was seen covering BoJo less than 24 hours ago, is now having to comment on Abe.

I think CNNI and its staff have done a great job these last few days but it’s clear the channel has been neglected in recent times and has suffered from being second fiddle to CNNUS for so long.

On a positive note the last few days have proved how strong some of the previously unheralded anchors like Isa Soares, Bianca Nobilo, Kim Brunhuber and Lynda Kinkade are.

Also on a different note I love the look and presentation the CNNI Newsroom editions have - simple, punchy, authoritive and elegant and for branding that is nearly 8 years old it still feels as fresh as it did on Day 1.

Chris Licht has announced his new management for CNN Global: Washington Post chief communications officer Kris Coratti Kelly has been named executive vice president and head of global communications and branding. Michael Bass (EVP of CNN Original Series), Virginia Moseley (EVP of editorial), Amy Entelis (EVP of talent and content development) and Ken Jautz (EVP of news programming and HLN) have been formally named in their respective positions, being posted initially by Licht in an interim basis. San Feist has been retained as Washington bureau chief, and Mike McCarthy will remain EVP and General Manager of CNN International. Calvin Sims, on the other side, has been replaced by Johnita Due, with the Standards and Practices post being replaced by an Integrity and Inclusion post.

During summer, CNN becomes PNN - Paula Newton Network. She is everywhere, from European mornings to European primetime, covering every possible show, sometimes even several a day. And she's marvelous!
