Launch TalkTV
I think The Talk would be much improved if they were more varied in the panelists they use. Nicola Thorp was on 4 of the 5 days this week, just too much IMO. Too much Feltz, Kyle & Graham as well.
Ultimately is the market big enough for two Alternative News channels? I think Talk needs to buy GB News or GB News needs to buy Talk. You feel they would be stronger together.
Problem with the Talk is that is it is just a less entertaining version of Loose Women. Maybe they could do with taking some lessons and lightening it up a bit. It’s all a bit serious for 9pm on a weeknight.

It lacks wit. GB News seem to have stumbled across a formula that works for them by using comedians for their paper reviews. The Talk with someone like Frank Skinner could be a winner.

One thing we don't really have is a nightly sideways look at the news. I know there's some nights that isn't going to be possible but there must be a market for a nightly John Oliver or Russell Howard look at the stories of the day.  (Both of course have ripped on GB News on separate occasions.)

I'm not suggesting it has to be on either of those networks either, principally because to work you've got to be able to lay in to all sides, eg. Starmer should be as fair game as Johnson (merely an example.) I'm strongly of the opinion that either everything is OK to rip on or nothing is, but you do have to read the room.

That has long been the suggestion of the eventual outcome and has cropped up again today with Discovery reportedly wanting out of GB News.   Since the merger with Warner Bros they've been pretty brutal at getting out of anything that loses them money.

I think the most surprising part of that Guardian article is the following line:

Quote:Mid-level celebrities and people briefly in the public eye have been delighted to earn over £10,000 for appearing on Morgan’s show.

That's a ridiculous amount of money and surely is not sustainable for long.

So what do you think will happen?  Rupert buys GB?

The cynical side of me thinks that could be quite a clever move.  Both networks have some genuinely good talent on both sides of the cameras.  If anything, an "alternative" news channel needs GB News' aggression and bolshy-outsider attitude, but with Murdoch's high production values, technical standards and commercial noggin.

The Guardian have more than a bit of an agenda so I'm taking that with a MASSIVE pinch of salt.
It seems to me that Talk TV has to go down as one of Rupert Murdoch's biggest failures. The best he can do is pull the plug on TV channel and turn it back into a radio station.

As for buying GB News? I wouldn't even bother. All he would do is replace most of the presenters there with his Talk TV presenters. GB News is forging it's own path and it will work itself out in the end.

What about the primetime presenters? I think Tom Newton-Dunn will revert back to Times Radio, Piers Morgan will drift off away from our screens and Sharon Osbourne will go back to LA.

Such a shame because even though they have the highest production values, the quality of the presenters especially at primetime is poor.

My only hope is that LBC steps up to being a TV channel and do things properly.
I don’t think Rupes will pull the plug yet. But I don’t think talkTV will ever really improve its meagre ratings. So ultimately how do you solve a problem like Piers? He’s on a vast, multi-year deal. They could put him on talkRADIO but the breakfast slot already works nicely, and he wouldn’t fit on Times Radio.

Maybe they’d end up somehow embedding his bespoke video content onto the Sun website, to go with his columns? Plus maybe a weekly talkRADIO show?
I can't see Piers doing talkRADIO, I just don't think he'd be able to handle a phone in. Nor do I think he's popular enough with their audience to replace Julia on breakfast.

Kyle is finishing his time on drivetime this week and is starting a new talkTV primetime show. Seems like a replacement is lined up for drive, no idea who it will be.

It doesn’t make sense for Talk to go back to being radio only. Yes get rid of all the stuff that’s been commissioned for TV. But visualising the radio output is surely a relativity low cost way of increasing the reach. I’ve said before they’d have been better off making a studio like the LBC Westminster one and doing all programming from there, which would be equally suited to both radio and TV.

If News UK, did take over GB News it wouldn’t be because they thought they were failing and they wouldn’t get rid of most the talent either. I could see them getting rid of some of the stand alone hour blocks that can’t make sense financially.

If I was advising Mr Murdoch, I would advise that this format only works on radio and would be better off being as such. Having said that, I wouldn't see any harm in going for a new channel but one that is more news based rather than opinion based.

I'll be honest, I was intrigued with the original News UK TV idea when David Rhodes was brought in and I would've been curious as to what he would have done differently to Scott Taunton et al.

News UK has the talent at their disposal and yet somehow, it is not using it properly of which I'm mystified.

I completely agree about the LBC Westminster Studios. It's smart looking, professional and very TV and Radio friendly. Personally, I think GB News should pursue this type of studio as all of its programmes would suit it.

If memory serves me right, he has a book deal with HarperCollins that is paying him some of this money. He should be given a column in The Times that could be syndicated in the Australian national and local newspapers to make up for any shortfalls. A one hour weekly show wouldn't go a miss and I think he would be better off hosting a debate show.
Jeremy Kyle is leaving drivetime for a new primetime show on TalkTV.

"Three want Kevin O'Sullivan, three want Cristo, who would you like to take over?"

Confirmed, as expected. Is this going to be 9pm, 10pm or 9-11pm?

No chance of paying him all that money and getting him in 1 hour a week. 1 hour a day in a debate format would probably do OK but wouldn’t set the world alight. It needs a fresh pair of eyes from an editorial perspective and I think murdoch has recognised that now.
