4Music to become E4 Extra

At least we have Talking Pictures TV, which caters for that sort of content. It is a level of niche that I doubt many broadcasters are willing to take a risk upon.

E4 Extra will be on Freesat EPG 181, which is miles away from the rest of the 4 family of channels (121-127). Why don't C4 have the commonsense and move it up, and dump More4+1 to the dead end of the entertainment EPG.

More4+1 is leaving Freeview soon so it would make sense to do that but I don't think it would be worth the effort for C4 to change it then change it again.

Longer term that probably makes sense but there is logic in keeping it where current 4Music viewers find 4Music for now given much of the content will move over.

P.S. Wonder whether this will be operated by C4 itself or if it'l remain under the operation of BOX Plus given they would be losing a channel and the BOX Network is still somewhat operated in it's own right.

If 4Music is leaving Freeview, possibly with NOW 80s and That's TV, will that mean there will be no more music channels on Freeview outside of Manchester?

It looks like to me that E4 Extra will replace the ARQ A slot on LCN 31 currently managed by The Box Plus Network switching to the main C4 group playout. 4Music stays with Box Plus on other platforms replacing the existing Box Hits.

It wouldn't make any sense at all for ex-Bauer management to have E4 Extra; this should switch to the main C4 playout

That's a real shame.   They'd be no harm in giving it the downtime of Film4+1 so it airs through to midday - that way Freeview viewers still effectively get the music content they currently do.   They could potentially make it available outside those hours as a streamed channel too.

Given Channel 4 acquired Bauer's 50% stake in The Box Plus Network back in January 2019, it makes no real difference; the two are now one and the same.

Already is: https://www.boxplus.com/?channel=box-hits
They're both women and that trumps regionality; ITV guidelines

The general operations were rolled into Channel 4 though the roles are still somewhat specific to the Box Plus channels. And the playout remains separate from Channel 4, though as we know both use Red Bee.

I can't help wondering if E4 Extra will survive long term. It does feel slightly like this move makes it easier to close the channel in the future and point people to a section of All4. That said somehow 4Seven still survives as a linear channel.

I guess a lot depends upon the impending privatisation, and what any new owners want to focus on.

I don't think they're about to shut it down, nevertheless, things become easier by focusing on E4 alone.

As for the ITV2/ITV Be thing, there are some important differences, I don't think E4 is ever going to get rid of popular TBBT, for an all-reality show schedule, and so on, and viceversa for E4 Extra; the channels will be complimentary

E4 Extra's idents have been revealed, with idents that look scarily realistic and uncanny valley. Eels, interdimensional monsters and pelicans...
