I bet this was one of highest-rated Wogans of the era- it was an absolutely huge deal at the time. Not only was Neighbours massive at this point, but it was still quite rare to see interviews with cast members, so to see a gaggle of them was quite exceptional. (They also repeated this edition to replace a strike-hit Wogan several months later so it’s probably one of the one most-seen episodes ever).

Getting 850k viewers across the 2 showings (and presumably there's some viewers who watch both) really does make clear why Channel 5 couldn't justify continuing to fund production.

Lunchtime outrating teatime is astonishing. I fully expected that to be the other way round. To not get at least a million isn't something to crow about though.

Yeah, Neighbours being the highest rated show of the day doesn't mean Neighbours is doing well, it means everything else on Channel 5 is underperforming. It should easily be out-rated by every prime time show.

In the context of daytime ratings Neighbours does OK, but when the primetime drama they're reinvesting in comfortably gets 2m+ it's a no brainer really.

The same day catch up ratings are lumped into the lunchtime showing's ratings rather than the evening repeat's which makes it artificially higher than the actual live rating. I can see from my work ratings grid that just under half of the 521k were actually watching it live on Friday. Just shows it as a wavey graph rather than giving any figures so I don't know the exact number but it will be around 250k.

I imagine most people who PVR it (PVR’s are still used quite well.) also record the Lunchtime showing as well

It depends on if Channel 5 put Home and Away in the lunchtime slot, as some may just tune in and watch that instead. At least with Doctors back to 5 episodes from the autumn, it will be like for like again.

Out of interest how many people are watching Home & Away on C5 at lunch, 5* (either repeat or first look) or streaming?  I note when C5 say it's on at lunchtimes on social media, several users point out "and on 5* at 6:30" as if to correct them.  I thought people wouldn't like the drop in picture quality (even on SD the main channel is better quality than 5* which is borderline marginal)
