I’m surprised by some of the comments in this thread about this… the interview itself with the minister on Monday was painful to watch. Kay did give her the chance to correct the comments at the time, but instead repeated what she said iirc. It gained a load of views online, was been discussed on social media so it’s hardly surprising that Kay was going to bring up the comments on subsequent days, especially when those days had more senior government officials. Yes Kay can be like ‘a dog with a bone at times’ but if it’s justified, then I’m all for it. And in this case it was imo.

The government aren’t happy because it’s a bad look but there’s no sugar coating a minister saying we need to help people “get better paid jobs” and “or more hours” - 1) who’s going to do those lower paid jobs? The minister was suggesting we shun those jobs. Surely the situation is to increase those kinds of roles as if people can’t live on the wages, who we expecting to do it? 2) As for getting more hours, there’s very few people I know who don’t overtime and such when it’s available, especially those on part time hours. But it’s balance too, some people are part time because of childcare etc. And everyone needs downtime, days off etc.

Without wishing to get political, the Minister’s comments were clearly taken out of context when repackaged for social media, designed to generate as much engagement as possible. As a result, the Minister in question suffered an enormous amount of online abuse, including a death threat. It was not responsible reporting. 

Broadcast outlets are certainly not entitled to be on the morning round each day. Kay Burley’s audience numbers have never set the world alight, so if whichever Minister is up that morning is going to get unfairly leapt on for clicks later that day, there’s very little benefit for the Government putting a Minister up. It’s that simple, and certainly isn’t about avoiding scrutiny. 

Sky News have not been banned by any stretch of the imagination, they will simply have to bid for a Minister like other outlets have to (which their journalists already do several times a day outside the morning round).

There seems to be the standard government minister on Sophie Ridge tomorrow morning.

To me I've stopped watching these interviews. The Government send the same minister to seven ten minute maximum interviews on general topics each morning and to give the current government PR view. The interviewer generally looks to catch the interviewee out, in the absence of getting any worthwhile answers. On either side it isn't generating much light. Usually the minister spends most of the interview answering the questions they have practiced, rather than the actual ones asked. No one, especially the prime minister who won't even do the short ones but occasionally an even shorter pooled interview, will do anything else.

I was brought up in the Brian Walden era when the minister would be interviewed for half an hour (and later on for a commercial hour) on their specialist subject, and knowledge would usually be gained. Now we all know the questions and what the answers will be. The Sunday interviews are no different from the weekday breakfast ones.

Without wishing to get too much into the political side, I do think it’s an odd look that on the whole people on here seem to be taking the politicians side. Journalists are not the enemy and if political interviews are often a chore or useless most of the time it’s because politicians refuse to answer the actual question asked or stick si rigidly to the party line that they may as well play a tape recording.

Presumably some on here will now be criticising Sophy Ridge for her interview with Nadhim Zahawi today and trying to get an answer from him to a question he wasn't even trying to answer.

Changes to the Climate Show incoming. Moving to 3:30pm in the afternoon for 10 mins and then a weekly version airing in July which goes to the weekends.

In highly unsurprising news, Sky have binned the Daily Climate Show according to Guido, to be reformatted into a ten minute slot in the afternoon.

It was always a long shot it was going to be anything resembling successful, and the viewing figures have been pretty dire from what I can gather.

A nice use of the virtual studio, however, and a rare glimpse of creative presentation from Sky News.

Ignoring the comments from Guido in that report as I think it's something Sky should be doing, it seems a much better concept by sticking it on at 3.30pm for 10 mins with a weekly round-up at the weekend which is more likely to be watched online than live.

There's no Ian King as you expect but Kay is continuing until 11am rather than bringing in someone like Jayne one hour early instead.
