I think BT Sport were smart in entering into this venture with WBD. It means that they combine all of the sports as mentioned earlier in this thread that would attract more subscribers.

However, with Eurosport currently FTA on Sky, Virgin and BT does this new deal mean we have to start paying a subscription fee when it is rebranded or will it stay the same?

If I'm being honest, I think that WBD will buy out the other 50% and maybe, directly compete with Sky Sports especially for Premier League rights from 2025 onwards.

Eurosport isn't free to air - it is part of the subscription packages, just not a premium subscription. The news release said that an extension to the deals with Sky had been agreed - I assume the same will be the case for Virgin Media soon.

BT Sport is part of the top subscription package on Virgin Media, from memory when it effectively had no sport during Covid we got about £6 reduction.

Difficult to do - Eurosport isn't a premium sports brand, and people who are paying for BT Sport need to keep feeling that they're receiving a premium service. 

Despite several attempts trying to make 'Eurosport' a thing in America, to limited effect, it feels like Discovery just don't have a brand of sufficient stature to house BT at the moment. They'd probably need something new that would work in every country of the world. Eurosport is probably not it. Discovery Sport is probably not it. HBO Sports? Possibly, but it might carry the wrong connotation (e.g. Pay-Per-View) in the UK for those with long memories. And whether the Discovery management would swallow their pride enough to spotlight a Warner brand is also hard to guess.

I can imagine Eurosport retaining its name, perhaps with a prestige tagline to illustrate that it is "part of the HBO Sports network" or similar, but I can't really imagine the Eurosport name taking the main stage. Could be wrong though.

There's really no strong answer to the question of what the future Discovery sports venture will be called, I think, at least based on some of the recent approaches to it by what is now Warner Bros. Discovery in other markets:

- The Indian version of Eurosport originally launched under the name DSport in 2017, using an alteration of the Eurosport logo (at the time, it was a partnership between Discovery and local broadcaster). Following a dispute, Discovery wrested full control of the channel in 2020 and the other broadcaster launched their own sports channel.



- Upon what was then WarnerMedia acquiring the rights to half of the games of the top flight of Argentine soccer, they launched TNT Sports as a channel to air the games. Following their acquisition of Chile's CDF (formerly Canal del Fútbol) in 2021, the TNT Sports brand expanded there, as well as in Brazil, as the branding for sports coverage on their entertainment channels TNT and Space (Turner previously owned the Esporte Interativo channels from 2015 until closing them in 2018). Below is that brand's logo as of the pan-continental standardization in 2021 (good lord that typography mangling):



Discovery lacks much in the way of non-Eurosport sports rights in much of the rest of the world (aside from what they have on Denmark's Canal 9 and the Swedish streaming operation, Discovery+ Sport), and on the ex-WarnerMedia side, what sports coverage they have on their US channels is branded as "[league] on [channel]", as is the norm here.

If I were to take a guess at it, maybe they'd go with DSport again; if they did, I think it's up in the air as to whether or not they'd change the logo to differentiate it from Eurosport.

It's going on the red button on BT Sport once the soccer season starts next week. It will be interesting to see if it is HDR as well as 4K. On Virgin it is 4K, on some of the apps it is both (e.g. Roku and Xbox).

Going on recent patterns on skyq I think it will be, as expected both tests are encrypted and probably not tuneable on a skyq box.

So, look out tomorrow morning for a few changes. Mostly tweaks rather than anything too massive, with some of it already previewed around the Champions League final last season. 

And while the channel name is changing, the ESPN brand isn't entirely going to dissappear from screens (keep a look out around the start of certain US sports).
