Laura Kuenssberg to take over Marr Slot

She’s probably a good shout for taking over from Andrew Neil during an election.

She did do one of the leader interviews in 2019, with Adam Price. I think it only went out in Wales while everywhere else saw Andrew Neil and Nicola Sturgeon.

For those interested, the Times Red Box podcast recently did a mini-series of six podcasts covering 'The Sunday Shows at 50'.  They are short 25-minute podcasts covering Weekend World, Breakfast with Frost, On The Record etc. right out up to Marr.

Unfortunately, Matt Chorley (the host) isn't really a natural narrator and some of the production values are a little iffy but they have a lot of good guest interviews and talk a lot about behind-the-scenes things, including the On The Record titles. I found it an interesting listen.

Jo Coburn was absolutely electric on Sunday Morning, she comprehensively questioned the CEO of E.ON on what more energy companies could do for people, and interrogated the Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi on partygate to the point he looked he was going to spontaneously combust! Usually he projects a very calm and considered demeanor. Slightly gotcha-esque, but very impressive.

Normally a big fan but I was getting very annoyed at her asking Zahawi a question and then immediately interrupting his answer.

If politicians answered the question they were asked honestly in the first place then they might not be interrupted by interviewerers so often.

But the dilemma for every politician of all flavours, is that what would be a 'correct answer' today, may not be the same in a few days time.  It's easier for them to obfuscate and then claim in the future that what they said at the time matches the 'new truth'.

It demonstrates the true skill of an interviewer who can ask questions which cause the politician to seemingly paint themselves into a corner, so that the true answer can actually be inferred by the viewer.

Jo Coburn demonstrated this very well on 'Sunday Morning' with Nadhim Zahawi, who I half expected to run and hide behind the sofa towards the end.

It is a little unfortunate also that the role now seems likely to go to a middle-aged man in todays climate.

The best person should get the job full stop.

To be ruled out because of someone's age and gender seems to be a step backwards to me and that applies to everyone, not just middle-aged blokes like me.

If anything is "unfortunate", it's thinking that someone with a particular set of immutable qualities should be prevented from getting a job because someone who has had the position previously had the same or similar immutable qualities.

The BBC has done an amazing job on getting female and ethnic minority voices on screen. Quite right too. The BBC should reflect the nation as we are. 

I don't know who the Anoushka lass is personally but I do have a lot of time for Sophie Ridge. I can't say why Chris Mason was chosen over them but, given the BBC's commitment to equality of opportunity, they're the last organisation I would accuse of racism and sexism in hiring practices. Mind you, they have been accused of ageism quite a bit so who's to say?

It's been confirmed by Paul Royall on Newswatch that Studio B is going to be used for Laura's new programme, so we can already get an understanding of what elements are going to unfold for the presentation aspect there (and that might be why the desk is as large as it is).

It messes with my OCD that Scotland broke ranks with red "Politics <Region>" branding. And that Northern Ireland have never even adopted it, instead still continuing with the "Sunday Politics" style branding that was ditched everywhere else.

Oh, but we do have Politics Scotland:



It's a long-established brand for programming about Scottish Parliamentary business and politics.  It airs twice weekly on BBC One Scotland on Wednesdays at 14:15 to cover what's going on in parliament and Scottish politics this week, and then on Thursdays at 12:00 to cover First Minister's Questions.

The Sunday Show is a bit weak in comparison, partly because it's simulcast on BBC One Scotland and Radio Scotland - so can't do anything too fancy on-screen - and then continues on Radio Scotland only for a further 90 minutes, and with a different host (?!).
