The 73% share amongst 16-34 year olds for Eurovision shows that younger viewers will watch BBC1 and there is a market for a weekly music show. While the last attempt - Sounds Like Friday Night - didn't do particularly well, a TOTP style show where artists are there on merit could work.

It would actually be such a novel idea on tv to have a live weekly pop show.

Lose the gimics that the latest Greg James thing had with pranks etc

Just a decent end to end music show, instead of the one show on a Friday.

Later with Jules Holland only seems to come into public consciousness for the Hootenanny. Indeed I bet many don't know he has a couple of regular series a year too - and indeed the BBC in their wisdom launched his new series against Eurovision on Saturday.

The only way I could see live music becoming a weekly thing is through a format similar to TFI Friday - basically a chat show but with a strong spine of live music performances.

Jools is not really for the general public given its scheduling and some of the artists he has on. A mainstream music show that isn't linked to the charts has to lean towards artists people know, which limits who can be booked and with no apparent reason for them being there it can be seen as just some performances. At least being chart-based widens the net and people may give artists they haven't necessarily heard of a chance because they are in the charts.

Don't the charts often feature old music now instead of new releases? It's not uncommon to see songs rise up it when the singer dies (and of course if a song charts for that reason, you wouldn't be able to get them to perform on TOTP). That wouldn't have been possible before digital releases became the norm.

You could say anything is irrelevant but even though the vast majority of viewers don't go dancing, fine dining or walk around junk shops they still exist as entertainment on TV.

Any track can chart if it's popular enough. While the singles chart isn't as varied as it once was, the albums chart sees more indie and rock acts due to fans of those genres buying albums outright rather than cherry-picking songs off them.

Albums is what TOTP in its latter years should have focused more on rather than music that hadn't yet been released or showing clips of acts that were no longer relevant.

Maybe it’s less that chart is “irrelevant” more that seeing a music video or performance you can do on demand - YouTube tiktok etc - it’s not a diary event to tune in for .

This is why “phone in” style music channels faded out too - there’s much easier ways to hear/see your favourite tracks
