The Games
#1
The ITV revival of Channel 4 show The Games has begun tonight.

Must say it doesn’t seem as polished as I remember The Games used to be. Seems to be a lot of silence during Replays. And Freddie Flintoff isn’t taking to reading off an autocue very well at all.

The theme tune was a bit lacklustre as well, I remember The Games having a great theme tune before and impressive music cues all throughout the show.

Still, it’s nice to have something that’s a bit different and live on ITV every evening.

I’m not sure if every night is live, Applause Store had tickets for some events that weren’t taking place this week. There’s no LIVE DOG either, which is noticeable given most live ITV entertainment shows have one.

They’ve now cut to an event which was clearly filmed much earlier in the day and is being shown as an edited montage, so it’s obviously not live tonight.

I love the studio set, although the sofa could’ve been curved round on Holly and Freddie’s side. Reminds of the old Big Brother’s Big Mouth set (circa Russell Brand).

Finding this such a snooze fest. Too slow

I’m sure it will pick up over the course of the week. Like most new shows it tends to start off safe but then picks up momentum.

So much padding, and quite surprised that the filming of the actual events (so far) seemed quite shoddy. That hammer-throwing gave no real on-screen indication of the distance being thrown. Not even a wide shot to help compare each one?!

The whole thing is a bit... weird. Should give the Goggleboxers something to laugh at, if nothing else.

Really is pretty flat. Love the studio but there is no atmosphere in there and they seem to have more presenters than athletes - and Yung Filly is the only one who seems enthused by it all. Holly and Freddie proving too that you can't just put two pretty decent presenters together and create chemistry - if it's not there it's not there.

The logo is great but the surrounding graphics pretty basic. Really is missing the theme tune of the original one - even though I've probably not heard it for over 15 years I've got it in my head tonight. Doesn't seem to be anywhere online though - was just about to put a request in for it.

I’ve enjoyed it and it’s been great to have this programme back, I remember loving it so much back in the day. There were some bits that could have been sleeker, and I think I’d prefer to see the events always live, but it was a good first show.

As others have said the worst thing was not having a great theme tune, something that the old Channel 4 version did very well.
Brekkie, I’ve found the theme by Dobs Vye here:

I felt it was over padded. The first hour was a drag after the Women's 100m Hurdles, but the final 30 mins with the mixed diving and the Men's 100m Hurdles went a lot faster and was entertaining.

In all honesty, they should have been given an hour tonight allowing News at Ten and the regions on at the normal time.

Was looking forward to seeing this, but was left feeling a bit disappointed. As noted, pretty slow and just not quite exciting enough. I probably won't bother catching up tomorrow as it'll be Eurovision semi final instead.

But it did look nice on screen, the studio is good, the logo looked nice and I quite enjoyed seeing Holly Willoughby on prime time telly without Phillip (no issues with him as such, but she is a good presenter away from This Morning!).

I like the set, it does feel rather Big Brother-esque with the bunker type vibe, but it really annoyed me that there were large visible scratches on the back window, it's all I could look at throughout the studio parts. The graphics are OK, but could do with showing the ranking of the contestants after they've completed their sport - particularly in the syncro diving, they showed the scores each pair received but not where that put them on the leaderboard.

Have to say I'm a fan of the Holly/Freddie pairing but Yung Filly provided most of the entertainment and made it more watchable.

The CA did intro it as live yesterday, so presumed the studio and two races featured were the live elements and the rest recorded earlier in the day.

I’m just catching up with Tuesday night’s edition (due to Eurovision viewing), and the programme felt a lot more livelier being the aquatic centre with the crowd being in the same room (albeit a large one) as the pundits. They also seemed to make a lot of use out of the space too with many areas being used as presentation points.

Some nice shots of the Crystal Palace tx on tonight's final.

Is that about as exciting as this week got. Only skipped through recordings since Monday night - was particularly odd last night to host from Crystal Palace when the evens were at the Velodrome.
