It was obviously a Bank Holiday but 3,600 viewers is horrific and (I thought) barely measurable I’ve been impressed with it because they’ve basically managed to get a news show running from scratch. They have a wealth of talent across titles and with some new hires, they’ve done a proper actual news broadcast. Something that GB News still struggles with to this day. Yes it may not be majorly different to the main channels, but I guess that’s the point? I think for a new player to get a show like that on air is quite impressive. Rent-a-gobs are easy, but proper news is quite the task.

I’m not sure I’d describe News UK as a new player.

The latest TalkTV BARB figures show The News Desk with Tom Newton Dunn twice dropped to zero viewers detected last night, with nobody watching between 7pm-7:15pm and again from 7:30pm-7:45pm. There is one silver lining: as people tuned in for Piers at the end of the show, his average viewership actually increased to a mighty 4,800 at one point, up from 3,600 the night before. Things can only get better?
Meanwhile over at Piers Morgan Unwatched, the good news is it appears his viewership decline has bottomed out. His average viewership last night was 76,700, with around 118,000 tuning in at the start, and roughly 62,000 sticking around for the rest of the hour. The bad news is that’s half-a-percent of the prime time audience. 4,700 streamed the show on YouTube, which isn’t far off the average number of streams for an episode of Guido Talks. A show we usually filmed on our phones… https://order-order.com/2022/05/04/tom-n...on-talktv/ Should point out that the 3,600 figure for Monday was the whole slot average and last night’s 4,800 was for the final minutes of the programme. Potentially these figures are being generated by a single BARB panellist who represents approximately 5,000 viewers!

Funny how obsessed Guido Fawkes suddenly is with TV ratings. Guess there is some history there with Murdoch.

It's pretty dull and offers absolutely nothing new or better than the half dozen other highly quality options on at the same time (including ITV and Channel 4)? As stated it's either there to give the channel an anchor and prestige or it'll be given a few months and ditched for an opinion programme. It reminds me a bit of The New Day, the incredibly short-lived newspaper from the other year. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_Day_(newspaper) It was produced to a very high standard and there was nothing in it that people would find objectionable. But there was simply no reason for it to exist, really. People who were interested in the news were already buying a paper and those who weren't were never going to buy it. And The News Desk may well be a good show, well made, and it's probably quite refreshing that they've said they want to be completely straight and impartial and a bit positive, but as you say, there are numerous other shows doing that, so there's no reason to watch it. As I said in the Good Morning Britain thread, I think the whole concept of "news talk" is overrated in this country anyway. I think there's a very small minority of people who watch and listen to these things all day and tweet about them and so on, and create a lot of noise, which creates the perception there's a huge market for this kind of stuff. I think most people aren't that bothered. Even if they are, I doubt they want to watch this kind of thing in primetime, everyone's watching proper programmes at that point. This is sort of the problem with Talk TV, I think, they might get bigger audiences during the day where people are more used to watching this kind of thing, but the massive egos of some of the people involved means they want to be in primetime for the kudos of it. But those are dead hours for news channels.

They obviously don't have the resources that BBC, ITN and Sky have at their disposal, but what they have is probably more than GB News does. The fact that they uise the limited resources they have to produce something that is arguably better than, say, 5 News, is something that they should take some pride in.
It would be better to have Piers 7pm - 9pm with a co-host and a news agenda in the proper studio - like an evening version of GMB.
In their rush to get Piers on screen they've really gone about this the wrong way. The Talk Radio sustaining service just isn't strong enough for 21 hours a day and all weekend.

Is Jermey Kyle now a presenter for TalkTV?
(04-05-2022, 04:53 PM)Niall Wrote: Is Jermey Kyle now a presenter for TalkTV?Yes, he’s been on it through his Talk Radio programme from the start which he’s been doing since sometime last year. And has been a regular presenter on The Talk, since the start of Talk TV. He’s also got his own new programme coming up that’s a Talk TV commission, rather than just a simulcast of his radio show. So the Talk Radio bits are just bonus content. From the bits I’ve seen TalkRadio on TalkTV I’ve quite enjoyed it but maybe that’s down to the novelty of it.

I can't help thinking that they should have invested in tv output during the day (10am-6pm) and then a late evening news review show which would leave the radio phone-ins in prime-time as filler when the audience is watching the main channels.
The Talk seems like reasonable daytime chat, but it's not going to work at 9pm. Uncovered still feels like it's designed for the US market which just happens to have a British presenter who is well known over there and is disruptive for all the wrong reasons and I don't mean Morgan's politics. The New Day analogy is probably the best one for The News Desk. It's worthy and ticks a lot of boxes, but to actually make it appointment to view television is hard.

Didn’t people here say the opposite about GB News when it launched though? That they’d tried to go in with too much television output and maybe they’d have been better doing a few hours instead.
That’s basically what TalkTV have done, because the Radio stuff was running online anyway.

Although budget wise Talk TV have probably invested more in those three hours - and indeed in the Piers hour alone - than GB News have across the entire day. Or even year if Piers reports salary is to be believed (and to think he had the nerve to have a rant about "money grabbing Meghan Markle" last night!).
I would say it is crucial though to have the TV channel up and running as people arrive home for the evening to bring them over from the BBC/ITV 6pm bulletins. However drive time is also crucial for radio so as long as they're simulcast one side is always going to be compromised.
