Not surprising though. He wasn’t given much to do since Your World Today was so quickly axed. I hope he finds a good role somewhere else.

Such a shame. He was riding high with a 2 hour, daily show on CNNI, only to end up doing nothing for 2 years, thanks to pandemic and not being able to find a new gig on the network.

That's a shame - Cyril was a very capable anchor and I really liked the pairing of him & Isa on Your World Today. It was a shame that show never really got a chance and seemed to be pre-empted for CNN Domestic more than it actually aired.

With the various shows that come from London (Isa's edition of Newsroom, Hala Gorani Tonight, Amanpour, The Brief) I'm surprised they didn't keep him around for cover duty or create a weekend slot he could anchor given International output is very lacking during weekends.

He'd definetely be an asset for one of the other news channels based in London to pick up whether it be BBC World, Sky or Al Jazeera.

I did wonder why he wasn't involved in the French election coverage given he'd been reporting from France for a while (though CNN luckily do have some fantastic correspondents there in Melissa Bell and Jim Bittermann).

CNNI do seem to have a lot of talent without a permanent home, so it’s hard to justify keeping additional spare anchors. Max Foster still doesn’t have an official show and I can’t remember when I last saw Robyn Curnow on air. Paula Newton seems to be filling in more, with Lynda Kinkade rarely seen. Larry Madowo and Eleni Giokis paired well during their coverage on the Dubai Expo. And of course Kristie Lu Stout and Ana Coren occasionally fill the anchor seat when they remember Hong Kong exists.

Who knows if Warner Bros Discovery will be keen on expanding any CNNI output. Hopefully we’ll see some improvements, I just don’t know if we should expect anything.

I remain cautious, but I hope Warner Bros Discovery will bring more Asia programming, particularly out of Hong Kong. There is a studio there that's not being used and great talent, it makes no sense to just axe all programming from their Asia hub.

I think if anything, this unfortunate war in Ukraine has enabled CNN to do what it does best. No other network has so many people in the field. There was an article posted a while back that pitted CNN as providing the most coverage with the biggest team, with the BBC just behind them. CNN has provided 24 coverage during this time and had indeed utilised CNNi anchors and correspondents throughout. I don't think it's ever looked so healthy.

I’m absolutely shocked by this news. Curious to see what’s next for Hala, it must’ve taken something big to step away from her show in the middle of a war.

Lynda Kinkade has taken some time off to visit family if that reassures you... on the other hand, Hala Gorani and Cyril Vanier's departures are a real shame.

I do wish that Robyn Curnow had a daily show or something again, I've not seen her in awhile either, but assumed she would be on when I would be sleeping.

I do hope that new ownership and leadership will see that CNNI is useful and valuable, but I'm not going to be holding hope, until I see any action that shows they will. If they want to simulcast they could still do that, but improve the content of the simulcasted programmes to have content that works for international audiences, as well.

The White House Correspondent’s Dinner was held tonight for the first time in 3 years. Trevor Noah headlined and took aim at everyone, including CNN. Jokes included “Everyone make yourself comfortable, well not too comfortable Jeffrey Toobin”, “Where is Chris Cuomo”, “Chef Jose is here. When disaster strikes he’s there, which is why he’s at the CNN table.” “Where is Jeff Zucker…Zucker left because of an office relationship he wanted to keep hidden. If he really wanted to hide it he should have put it on CNN+”. Noah had a good dig at CNN+, including jokes that John King should’ve been able to predict with his Magic Wall and that Stanley Tucci already found Italy and he’s swindling CNN. He also gave a shout out to Chris Licht and told him the first job is to find someone to turn off the Breaking News banner that’s been on since the OJ chase.

Chris Licht has some serious work to do if he wants to improve CNN’s reputation. I’d expect some jokes about CNN during the WHCD, but a failed $300m project and multiple cases involving people acting inappropriately are big black eyes to recover from.

Of course, CNN didn’t let the Stanley Tucci’s jokes stop them from plugging the new series tomorrow and airing an old episode now.
