I was never a fan of the Spikey version, I don't know why though. Honestly it ticked all the right boxes for me but never landed properly IMO.

Bear in mind the context of the idents on Gameshow Marathon. They were emulating the original show intros, including the front cap. There was one (Blankety Blank in season 2) that didn't have a frontcap, because it was a BBC show originally - ITV could use it because the show belongs to Thames (who co-produced GS with Granada), having originally been made by Grundy. Any show launched after 1988 would probably not have used an ident either.

For me it was let down by too many of the contestants being either rubbish at darts or rubbish at general knowledge, so there just wasn't much excitement.

Always been half the appeal of the format, surely? A county player who can't play darts and a partner who doesn't know anything. Sometimes the outcome of the 101 on the original show was more by luck than anything else, especially when the non-dart player managed to win the car/caravan/speedboat in two throws and the supposedly league player lost three prizes on the prize board.

It does however highlight the love and attention to detail that the Gameshow Marathon production applied to each and every show. It was easy to deride the concept at the time but they certainly put the effort in.

Yes, and of course the original series of the Gameshow Marathon was as part of ITV's fiftieth anniversary celebrations so they were obviously going to go big on the nostalgia angle, in a way that's not required on Epic Gameshow - not least, probably, because one of the aims of it is to illustrate Fremantle's catalogue of formats and illustrate that they're still relevant to any broadcaster who might want to buy them to make a series in their own right.

I'd be interested to see Name That Tune in this series because they did it in the second series of Gameshow Marathon and it worked quite well. It was interesting to see The Price Is Right this weekend as that's surely the format that depends the most on having a live and raucous audience, but they did a decent job of doing it without one by getting Contestants Row more involved (they are doing it every day on US TV without an audience, mind, so they weren't starting from scratch). I think it did illustrate that you can buy into the contestants getting incredibly over-excited at everything when there's a big audience egging them on, but without it, it looked a bit contrived and artificial. But I've never been crazy about The Price Is Right as a format, to be honest. The Shell Game had a very elaborate set for the most basic game imaginable.

I have it in mind that a couple of the idents used on the original Gameshow Marathon were the wrong ones. Not 100% certain, but didn't they use a Yorkshire ident before The Price Is Right or something like that?

I'd be interested to see Name That Tune in this series because they did it in the second series of Gameshow Marathon and it worked quite well. It was interesting to see The Price Is Right this weekend as that's surely the format that depends the most on having a live and raucous audience, but they did a decent job of doing it without one by getting Contestants Row more involved (they are doing it every day on US TV without an audience, mind, so they weren't starting from scratch). I assume Name That Tune on Epic Gameshow is a one time thing for Fremantle as the format rights were licensed to Banijay not too long ago unless the deal excludes the UK.

Yeah. Yorkshire only made the 90s version, Central made the 80s one. They corrected that mistake in series 2. They're all listed on the Wikipedia article.

I'd assumed they'd used Yorkshire so more regions would be played out over the series, since Central were going to be played at the end anyway for Bullseye and FF.
