BBC (Miscellaneous): 2021 Rebrand
A nice addition to the BBC Sport app I’ve only just discovered this week - if you pull down to refresh the app you get a nice little animation of the blocks in the top logo.

Same as the BBC News app has had for months now.

Not on iOS. It still has Top Stories and no logo.

I assume Moz is using the beta version that does have the animated BBC logo.
Yeah, there's just a BBC logo at the top of the BBC News app right now. No animation.

Yeah, I'd actually forgotten it was still beta!
Could it be? A building sign change already?

Thankfully they're yet to roll that out. BBC Sport has been refreshed nicely without compromising it and feels somewhat new despite essentially the same. The main BBC News app for now is the old one with the new logo, but the two or three times I've switched to the beta app I've switched back pretty quickly. Find it pretty unusable.

The loss of the current BBC Scotland logo, and especially the relatively short-lived current Radio Scotland logo, for this very bland one seems like a real backwards step. A distinctive look for the nations to give their services a sense of identity seems important.

The three diagonal lines first appeared in the late 80s and disappeared for some time after the 1997 rebrand before re-emerging. Maybe they’ll return again one day!

The ironic thing is the 3 lines Scotland logo fit the current icons pretty much perfectly.

As with all rebrands a few years down the line as things loosen up you’ll likely begin to see more distinctive identities appear again. Whether the BBC will have actually rolled out the rebrand by then however remains to be seen.

They'll do this through other means. Like an certain identity for all the channels. Like they did with the terrestrial channels. Like incorporating the 3 blocks into the Scotland symbol.

That looks like a fairly easy change of signage there, No illumination to consider, the height from the ground, use of existing fittings etc.

I think that this is the most major loss from the rebrand. The BBC Radio Scotland icon could so easily have worked with the new branding system, as it is in itself three blocks. But I suppose if they were to use an icon for Scotland, they'd have to find a way of doing one for Wales and NI too.

I actually did a mock of that once
Wonderfully weird.
