ITV Launch ITVX to replace ITVHub
#46
I think it's a much better brand that ITV Hub, which is a pretty terrible name for a streaming service really.

ITVX feels like a fresher brand and they'll no doubt be looking to aim it at a younger market.

Perhaps an opportunity to freshen up the brand a bit as I expect there will be lots of dual branding on broadcast itv.

Hardly a "world of plusses" when, besides their own, the only companies who use a plus for their services are Disney and Paramount, the latter of which has pretty much zero presence in the UK.

Edit: I stand corrected

They're both women and that trumps regionality; ITV guidelines

I do wonder if Microsoft's lawyers might be having a word.

lol, just like I said, Xbox logo. :lol:

I think I prefer how the Xbox logo looks next to the ITV logo than what has been produced.

As others I’m not a fan of the name, I understand the need for change to focus it more as a streaming service rather than catch up, but the marketing blurb about taking the + and changing it by 45 degrees, at the least the + on the brands means something.

I also understand that it is trying to reposition the company for their future, but I do think it takes away from the water cooler moments, everybody talking about a programme online at the time or as a reaction the following day, I think Trigger Point worked well as it was not all available straight away, allowed the show to breathe and created tension, something that is lost when two people have a conversation and one already know the ending.

Anyone mentioned that X is the Roman numeral for 5? So in a way ITV5.

But no doubt a complete coincidence rather than intentional.

I never liked the name “Hub”. It’s the sort of unimaginative name slapped on a crap cafe in a library or park or something else municipal.

Sorry – 5 is V, X is 10. That's been alluded to, yes!

Worth noting the BBC charter is due to be renewed in 2027. If the licence fee was replaced with a two tier funding (as per Andrew Neil's suggestion) then this would allow the BBC's current Britbox content to form part of a subscription tier offering (eg. 'iPlayer+').

In a linear world a two tier BBC has never really been practical but in a streaming world whilst it's great the BBC is making so much content available for free part of me thinks that they should really be moneitising that more - and perhaps it is easier to reach younger viewers through third party deals (so many found Peaky Blinders on Netflix, not iPlayer) than through their own.

Ultimately though how many subscriptions are people really willing to pay, especially during a cost of living crisis. I've never seen the point of paying for ITV Hub+ or All4+ just to skip the ads - I don't like them but I'm willing to sacrifice 3 minutes more than I am 3 quid a month for how frequently I use the services.

BritBox I only use when I get a free trial - indeed I've got the option of a free trial on Apple+ at the moment but just can't be bothered signing up to yet another service, with only Ted Lasso on there appealing really. Amazon I keep more for the free deliveries than the content - that's just a bonus. Now TV I'm watching less and less and with Euphoria finished I'll likely cancel next month for now, whilst Netflix is the only one I really keep out of choice as there are series cropping up every month or two which I do follow and enough extra content that I don't.

ITVX sounds like they're going for the Peacock model and if new content is part of the free tier I struggle to see a reason to add another subscription. BritBox has noticeably upped it's original content this year but all the new dramas feel pretty much the same - great if you like middle of the road crime dramas which ITV excel at, but not too appealling if you don't.

You do realize there's already six linear ITV channels, right? The non-numbered ones being CITV and ITV Be. So calling something ITV5 wouldn't make sense. Be's name is non-numerical because it's not the fifth channel, it's the sixth.

Also, as Joe said, X isn't 5.

The Morning Show is really enjoyable on AppleTV+. But again, I watched S1 of that in a free trial.

There's been talk before of streaming services consolidation down the line, but I really struggle to see how that's possible? Unless Amazon swoop in and buy Netflix, for example. What is there really around that can easily fit together?

I do think a whole UK PSB service would've been great, old content (like on BritBox) alongside latest TV stuff without adverts. But I guess this isn't very sustainable because the BBC will always need to offer iPlayer meanwhile ITV and C5 are trying to make commercial businesses. I guess ITVX (potentially down the line) swallowing up BritBox alongside ITV Hub is the first real 'consolidation'.

I guess you really have to stretch that ITV numbering system to beyond it's linear TV channels.

ITV1 = ITV
ITV2
ITV3
ITV4
ITV5 = CITV
ITV6 = ITVBe
ITV7 = ITV News (social media/VOD)
ITV8 = ITV Sport (same as above)
ITV9 = ITV Drama (I was going to say Encore, but that kinda doesn't work given that channel hasn't existed for years now and I imagine ITV have forgotten the brand's existence anyway)
ITVX

It's really up to interpretation (and Tumble Tower logic)
Also known as "Allanbuzzy" on other places.
