Jon Sopel and Emily Maitlis launch new podcast with Global

Jon Sopel has just announced that he’s leaving the BBC altogether to join Global

And Emily Maitlis has confirmed her departure from the BBC as well

Two massive losses for the BBC.

I can’t imagine they only doing a podcast though for Global. Must be hosting other stuff as well.

Two huge losses which now leaves Newsnight up for grabs.

This is a huge loss for the BBC, on top of a lot of recent departures. This obviously rules Jon Sopel out of the Political Editor role. I guess we may see Emily work on other TV projects outside of the BBC.

Just been confirmed on LBC itself that they will also present shows on the station.

What a win for Global - they're really building an (even more) credible news operation.

With Emma Barnett leaving as well I wonder if Newsnight itself might be ending soon.

Emily Maitlis in particular is a huge loss - she'd steadied what was a somewhat sinking ship at Newsnight in recent years and for me alongside Huw Edwards was the only real heavyweight left at the BBC who also was quite accessible to watch too.

Not too surprised about Jon Sopel - in a way feel like his BBC career was coming to an end anyway, but even though she's had a presence for 20 odd years in many ways Emily's was only just beginning to flourish.

Global obviously think there is money in podcasting, and news and current affairs based podcasting at that. It's a gamble - perhaps more of a loss leader than anything, but a very interesting move by them.

Interesting for LBC. With this show & Marr in coming, are we going to see more shorter shows at the weekend, or is some talent for the chop?

This quote makes me think the new podcast is basically going to be Global's version of the BBC's Newscast.

Obviously Jon Sopel won't become Political Editor then. Personally, I don't think that's a bad thing for the BBC.

Emily Maitlis is a much bigger loss I think.

It will be interesting to see how their podcast format transfers to Global. I've mentioned before that I enjoyed Americast, but the BBC's news podcasts tend to be most noteworthy by the contributions from Editors and correspondents as opposed to the presenters. However, I appreciate Emily's interviewing technique often gets to the crux of things.

To be honest, I lost count how often Anthony Zurcher gently corrected Sopel and/or Maitlis on Americast.

Nick Ferrari’s days on breakfast must be numbered.

They’re not going to make a major BBC signing like this without having big plans for them. Can’t see them just being tied down to a podcast of weekend shows.

Iain Dale's gotta be worried right?

Big loss for the BBC here, but I doubt they'll be the last big names to leave in the recent wave of departures.

It would also explain Jon Sopel's removal from the BBC News countdowns.

There's a sense of irony that Jon's gone from previously presenting a show called Global to presenting on Global.
As seen on BBC Newswatch

No, can’t see them being out anywhere other than breakfast eventually. Of course Iain Dale might lose out ultimately.

The question is if they do replace Farrari and he’s not happy to take a lesser slot, does he go to GB News or talkTV/radio.

Gutted. Both dead to me.

[mod]User warned for the above comment[/mod]

Really hope Christian Fraser is sticking around.

Bit over the top, no?
