So three commentators for the semi finals, from London while Ken & Graham will be from Rotterdam.

Amanda Holden will be spokesperson this year.

Though spotted this earlier, so needless to say, she may not be a popular choice.

Three commentators for the semis is a bit much isn't it? But as I expected, semi commentary will come from London - which I totally get in the current climate. I assume they'll still be able to watch the dress rehearsal, albeit at the studio. Am I right in saying they use IMG?

Can't say I'm feeling that enamoured about Holden.

EDIT: The article implies Ken will be in Wogan House, not Rotterdam.
Yes, they typically use IMG.

I can't say that I've ever been a massive fan of Scott Mills at Eurovision. He always seems to have a bit of a sneering attitude about it, rather than laughing with it. Almost as if he doesn't want to be associated with it too much to keep him 'cool' with the Radio 1 crowd. On the other hand, Rylan always comes across as a genuine fan, has a deep insight into the contest and the artists, plus it actually seems like he wants to be there!

I don't think so.. he is clearly happy to be associated with it or else he wouldn't do it. Rylan is probably takes it a bit more seriously.. but I think some fans take it too seriously. You can't laugh at the daft acts but then get upset when others do the same.

Agree with this, although I do love Rylan as a commentator.

I watched the Melodifestivalen final with the English commentary and although the girls were lovely, they played it uber-straight. I wouldn't want to see the BBC commentary do that.

We forget Graham's show is world famous because of the calibre of guests he has on it. That's why he gets picked up on by the hosts quite a bit - 2010, 2014 and Shine A Light all had chats with him. The perception is we take it very seriously - Graham is seen externally as a statement of gravitas!

Like you say, the people who moan the BBC commentators don't take it seriously are the same ones who then say Rome 1991 is their favourite contest and are desperate for Italy to win again soon!

I don't think anybody would want the commentators to take it seriously! It's just a song contest at the end of the day Big Grin

I agree, the English commentary for Melfest was a bit too straight. That and the fact they seemed to be using a potato as a microphone . I was very impressed that they are so dedicated to their international viewers that they offered English commentary at all this year!

In my opinion, I think Mel Giedroyc and Rylan have hit the right balance for me as semi-final presenters/commentators. At other times, I've felt like the balance has tipped towards "aren't foreigners silly" but that is just my opinion. It is certainly hard to strike a perfect balance between engaging 'casual' viewers and ESC fans. I think Graham Norton gets it about right for the final.

Interestingly, I went to EYD 2018 in Brighton, the one Edward Af Silen was hired in to script. He came to the OGAE party in a nearby gay bar afterwards - he made a beeline for me as I was wearing a "Love Love Peace Peace" T Shirt, and saying how much it meant to him I was wearing it. He was genuinely humbled I knew who he was. Lovely lovely guy.

Anyway, I congratulated him on an excellent script and he said Mel was "a dream" to write for. She's much maligned in the Eurovision community. I've since discovered she played the host in a production of Eurobeat, a musical not a million miles away from the Fire Saga movie, and her delivery wasn't itself too far removed from an Eastern European Petra...

Love Love Peace Peace was an absolute triumph.
I had to rewatch it a few times to pick up on all the subtle nods to previous years' contests.
Just one of many reasons that 2016 was my favourite ever ESC.
Absolutely fantastic work.
"Good evening. Dull, grey, cold, miserable - and that's just me. The weather hasn't been great, either."

I second that David, it was a brilliant piece of observational comedy put to a brilliantly catchy song, summing up the joyousness of the contest in a few minutes of excellent entertainment.

Love Love Peace Peace is watched at least every month, I'm always hoping Sweden will win again just to see how they would top it!
Also does anyone know if we will be seeing the Semi-Final/Final in 4k/HLG? A lot of the 2021 finalists videos on YouTube are in 4k

Hadn't heard of Chelcee Grimes until today, first being announced for a show on TalkSport and now as a third voice on the Eurovision commentary. Looking at her Wiki she'd probably be better utilised as our songwriter.

Not at the moment, and I don't think that many broadcasters have 4K linear channels yet. Streaming on 4K presents issues with the televoting based on the delays involved - although that's less of an issue with the YouTube feed which doesn't have any phone numbers on it. They're certainly not even shooting in 4K but I would assume that's going to be the next major techincal milestone.

I'd love Sweden to win again but my gut tells me not this year. It's probably the most wide-open field we've had for a while, but Malta, Luthuania, France and Switzerland all have a buzz going on.

Bit of a question, more of a semi-lockdown hobby really.

Is it still possible to pick up the satellite feed from the venue? I'm keen to seek out a clean feed without commentary or wraparound opt-outs on the midweek shows but retain the Dolby 5.1 audio, which YouTube obviously won't have.

I have an Enigma2 zGemma box gathering dust in my man drawer which I used to use for, er, Freesat honest guv. Or do I need something more fancy, as well as a new dish?

I'm assuming there aren't any legal issues viewing that feed since the show is being broadcast in the territory anyway?

I'm listening to all the finalists at the minute and I would say there are about ten songs I would be happy to see win. Malta (Je Me Casse) and Lithuania (Discoteque) are certainly in that ten.
There are a number of songs in that ten which I do feel might do well on the night, that are not necessarily favourites at the minute. I think a lot will depend on the mood of Europe at the time of the contest

This is always one of those things I have two opinions on (and for the record, Jamie I'm not coming for you for bringing it up Wink )! Just it sparked something in my head and something I wanted to bring up for discussion.

I've always been of the opinion that, yes it is a singing contest, but it is one of the most viewed programmes in the world too. For whoever wins it, both the broadcaster, the host city and the country itself, it's often both a huge economic cost and boost in terms of exposure and promotion as a destination, a beautiful place and whatnot (if they take the opportunity to do so as Portugal, Israel, Azerbaijan and others have done recently). The jokey nature of it seems to wear a bit thin on some Eurovision fans - who get mugged off when the promo on BBC One only shows the novelty acts. Imagine the promo for Match of the Day (a weak comparison, I know) being a montage of players falling over instead of scoring goals? The BBC's coverage announcement this week, while welcome for making an effort, kind of feels a bit "why on earth is Judge Rinder giving his expert opinion..."

I guess I come at it from the POV of a huge Eurovision fan, who is tired of it being seen in the entirely kitsch perspective, when other countries (away from the UK and Ireland) treat it as a fun night of television but a competition none the less, and a competition that they can win too by sending the best song they have right.

There's a fine line. On Come Together, Graham Norton was genuinely perplexed at some of the songs that made the shortlist (most notably Rhythm Inside, despite SuRie doing backing vocals on it!)

I think you can still laugh with the competition - we wouldn't be celebrating Verka Seduchka's many appearances since taking the 2007 silver if we didn't.
