It is a nice upgrade to the set, but it now looks too similar to TVNZ’s set. Thankfully the basics of the Jago set are still there.
Let’s see if Discovery can surprise us with the new morning programme tomorrow. It looks like they are doing a kickstart against Breakfast by doing a half-hour newscast at 5:30 before they go to the main programme at 6.

First look at Three's new AM show. To start, the early news-oriented portion (named AM Early), which is solely presented by Bernadine Oliver-Kerby (a TVNZ veteran, the former anchor of the weekend evening news alongside stalwart Peter Williams until 2016).

The graphics are much more appealing than those of AM (the colors use are quite garish and they look very American and really over-the-top), they are unique but they are in line with the entire TVNZ 1 News brand. And after a difficult post-Paul Henry period, they have found their feet successfully after responding to Paul Henry's arrival to Three breakfast and the successful competition posed by the AM Show. After going for Hilary Barry (before moving with Jeremy Wells into Seven Sharp), Jack Tame (before replacing deceased Greg Boyed in Q&A) and Hayley Holt (before being moved to the high-profile sport report with Simon Dallow); they finally hit the right note with John Campbell, Jenny-May Clarkson, Indira Stewart and Matty McLean. They are a really good team, they all have very good chemistry and the show has the right proportion of hard news and lighter segments, without being overtly tabloid and/or opinionated and a very feel good attitude (which is a big problem of Aussie breakfast TV, with the exception of ABC News Breakfast). Having Indira and Matty being dispensed of their news and weather presenter titles makes the show much more cozier and allows them to have a much more important role in the show content. That is why AM has failed to achieve what Breakfast has successfully done; I understand the show is in its infancy after parting ways with Mediaworks Radio, but if it needs to succeed, they must tone down the opinionated elements (not right for TV, but right for the radio-TV hybrid) and stick with hard news and lifestyle segments.
