You expect basic errors from the tabloids now but not the good old BBC. I would hope it was just a general discussion about various stories rather than them asking someone specifically to talk about it who has no idea what it is.

I expect they are gutted to be honest as Fremantle pay handsomely each of the 6 home owners a annual fee. Easy money for all the residents. I believe they only flim on the street once or twice a week maximum. The rest of the time it's just the daily tour bus.

Once the Fremantle money stops rolling in, I expect the houses will lose value, they will also loose the 24hr security guard sat in a car in the cul de sac, but will probably still have the hassle of tourist turning up at random, knocking on their doors and trampling on their grass and flowerbeds. At the moment tourists are only allowed on the public foot paths for photos.

Also the studio complex is just a 5 minute drive up the road from Pin Oak Court. Without Neighbours the whole studio is empty and will probably be sold to a developer for housing as its in a residential area anyway.

I live a 10 minute drive from both Pin Oak Court & the studios. Those homes will not lose value, the cancellation of Neighbours would increase values if anything. This area of Melbourne is extremely popular with Asian buyers, especially those from China. A lot of money from China being pumped into real estate here, not dissimilar to the Russian money being pumped into London property. This is one of the most sought-after areas in one of the world's hottest property markets. Potential Chinese buyers looking to purchase a Melbourne bolthole out of the CCP's reach would not want their new home shown on a TV show that has an international audience, even if they were paid to do so. A single-story house in Vermont South similar to the Ramsay St homes sold last weekend for AUD$1.7million. You also have a lot of expats & permament residency holders starting to leave Hong Kong - most are native HK'ers who came here in the late 80's & 90's to obtain citizenship or PR as a 'plan B' before the handover & returned to HK. Plan B is now in effect...

There would be no shortage of residential developers salivating to get their hands on the studios, which will most likely end up as medium or high density housing. A lot of the 'Neighbours' type homes are also being bulldozed and either replaced with multiple townhouses or having a faux French Provincial mansion built in their place.

Even during the lockdowns, I was still getting daily calls from estate agents chasing listings - a fitting end for Neighbours might be a few of the characters deciding to cash in & sell up after getting sick of constant phone calls & doorknocking from the local estate agents!

That sort of ending could be a little bit like how Brookside ended on Channel 4 all those years ago, selling up and leaving, although in Brookside it was some industrial firm that bought the residents out!

Getting back to Neighbours, it's a show I've never watched, so can't say too much about it's storylines, but in terms of international exports, in its heyday, what countries was it sold to, compared to now?

A sad state of affairs and all seems very sudden.

There's a rather appalling 'news article' posted by The Daily Mail (which I shan't link to) which effectively showcases a collection of photographs of cast members looking upset in the wake of the news.

Just one of the many tasteful captions reads "the blonde sported a blotchy complexion from crying as she clutched her Neighbours script and spoke to someone over the phone".

True gutter journalism. Exploiting people in the most appalling way at the most inappropriate and tactless time to get a few clicks. Not surprised, alas, but sickening stuff nevertheless.

Anyone involved in putting that sort of exploitative tabloid toss together really ought to be ashamed of themselves.

Slightly off topic but back in the late 70s, STV had a soap, shown only regionally, called Garnock Way, focusing on the struggles of an industrial town, midway between Edinburgh and Glasgow. It was axed by STV in 1982, but most of the cast moved to a new soap, Take the High Road. Is it possible that 10 may decide, in the near future, to use most of the cast members in a new soap, set in a different fictional location?

That's not going to save them money though. Only possibility might be a spin-off TV movie featuring select characters (the Kennedy's for example), but that's not the sort of thing that really happens nowadays.

A lot of love for the show on various news/programming and social media this morning, but I can't help but notice most of the outpour is coming from people who - admittedly - haven't really watched it for years. It's "Kylie" this or "Harold and Madge" that, with a bit of "Billy Kennedy was my first gay crush" thrown in for good measure

I'm sure it still has its few and faithful viewers, but I doubt most people would have noticed had it just silently been dropped. It won't be a big loss, IMO, and may even strengthen Home and Away's viewer/fan base as it will be the only regular Aussie soap remaining in the UK schedules.

Yes I’ve not watched neighbours since 1991 back in those days it was really popular, in the magazines ahd everyone was talking about it and it was on bbc I think twice a day, it was really good and gripping stuff with brilliant characters it really was great as was Home ahd Away not seen that since either.

Ive watched Neighbours on and off over the last 20 or so years, before that I was an avid viewer and rarely missed an episode. The majority of people who are complaining online or signing the petition are probably never likely to watch it if a new investor did take it on.

It seems ridiculous that the production company expects a UK broadcaster to practically fund the entire show to keep it going. They are lucky that Channel 5 did for so long. Its an Australian series not a UK series.
