Not a good idea as well, it's vital for the BBC to have a news channel for UK viewers.
Is it?
Yes it is, if it's vital for the BBC to have a news channel for world viewers, then it's vital to have a news channel for UK viewers as well.

To my point of view, the way to look at matters if there are to be significant cuts are:

1 - what is public service broadcasting?; and
2 - what doesn't the market provide that is felt important?

News, certain children's programmes, and a range of popular programmes could be thought of my me as near the top of 1
News, and certain children's programmes again tick the second box.

Spending money on listed sporting events, when they would otherwise be covered by ITV / C4 / Five wouldn't.

Yet listed sports events ad free on the BBC is one of the most values things by the licence fee payers, as seen any time the BBC and ITV simulcast an event and the BBC wins by at least 5:1.

it would be easy to target Match of the Day as an overly priced rights package for highlights which isn't even a listed sports event but it's one of the most important shows the BBC does - it probably brings an audience to the BBC who they don't get day in, day out.

It’s just… there. I get individuals may have an attachment (sorry JB I normally completely agree with you on most things) but I think that’s a tiny minority.

Regrettably, I think you and HEW2343 are absolutely right as the channel has been denigrated so much in recent years.

I think they could merge the NC into World News and still provide a good service. Even if they kept the News at 5 and hours of UK news a couple of times during the day, I think it would be a sensible move rather than sacrificing resources from other areas. Most people read the news online now so I think the days of having the NC and World News running seperately are numbered anyway.

I think the past couple years have shown the benefits of having separate UK & global output. What's of interest to UK viewers isn't always of interest to international viewers.

Worth noting though that over the past 5+ years there's been increased amounts of simulcasting, and not just due to covid staffing issues.

With studio B being refitted for national news it does presumably make it easier for the News Channel to have its own separate output. It also means they won't have to move out of E to allow 6 & 10pm bulletins time to prepare/rehearse. This would also presumably make it easier for the News Channel & World to simulcast more, especially if weekend national bulletins also came from B.

Exactly, it's not really a good idea to merge both the News Channel and World News Channel because it's vital that the BBC News Channel covers the top stories from the UK, not just around the world, I think eventually both the News channel and World News will go back to being separate news channels, just not right now whilst we're still in a pandemic and whilst the BBC tries to save money.

Except those two are nothing like each other. BBC News, the UK channel, is a very UK-focused current affairs channel. BBC World News is more focused on global themes. If we forced more British themes onto World News, it ceases to be relevant to the people watching BBC World News, who mostly don't live in the UK and therefore aren't as affected by, for example, the bird flu outbreak in Yorkshire. Equally, if we cut stories like that out of the BBC News channel and focused more on global stories like BBC World, it'd not be a programme that is relevant to British viewers and therefore wouldn't serve the public. As a result, it is actually the most reasonable thing to maintain the independence of the two channels with a few exceptions for programmes it makes sense to be shared.

Would always have the opportunity to have UK stories when World goes to ad breaks. And I wasn't saying that they are similar channels, clearly they are not, but I think a merged World News and NC (or rather World News in the UK with opt outs a few times a day for an hour or so) would be a good service if/when savings require cuts to be made.

Well it wouldn't, it would be terrible and thank goodness there isn't a merged world news channel, and also think of weather updates, there wouldn't be time to have a global weather update and a UK weather update.

Would be very easy for UK to opt out to national weather while World has its usual forecast

That's a minor detail. In the same way that Mosart could play out Recorded weather to BBC One HD and live news to BBC London from studio A simultaneously, playing out a UK and world weather forecast to different outlets shouldn't be a huge barrier.

Well it wouldn't however, the news channel and world news channel are better off separate.

I have to say that this whole idea of closing BBC Four does reek of spinning an idea that isn't seriously under consideration but will generate letters to MPs from middle England intellectual types

So then by that logic a merged children's channel would be a bad idea as well.
Wonderfully weird.
