So according to DS's 'Ratings Thread', Martin Kelner on talkSPORT earlier this morning broke an exclusive: he was told by Chris Choi that the ITV Evening News will be extended to one hour to become a "news and magazine show", clearly with one eye on The One Show audience.
Interestingly if the second half-hour is produced by ITN, then it'll clash with Channel 4 News which isn't ideal. Plus it'll mean changes to the soap hour.
Is this just so they can get enough broadcast minutes out, before disruption to the schedule from sport later in the year?
Typically when sport is on air during 6pm, the news broadcast minutes are reduced.

Channel 4 News and 5 News clashed every day for eighteen months in the late nineties, both ITN productions.
That will be the least of everyone's worries, the two programmes have very little crossover in terms of audience, and there are many production companies who have shows on two channels at once, if not more.

My first thoughts were that this was perhaps some sort of wind-up, or maybe just an idea that had been discussed chez ITV, but no - supposedly, it's actually happening (according to a couple of 'insiders' at the other place, anyway). Personally, I can't see why they would want to mess with the Evening News - it's their highest rating bulletin - and we all know what happened last time they messed with their highest rating bulletin... 
This proposed magazine programme actually sounds a little like the 'Good Evening Britain' idea that was mooted on the old forum a few years ago. Actually, assuming that all of this is true, it sounds like they're doing this in order to give the soaps a clear run from 7.30 to 9, perhaps forcing the Beeb to move EastEnders to 7pm. Anyway, it all sounds very interesting for those of us TV geeks. I have to wonder if they're going to keep Mary on as the presenter, or maybe give her a co-host?

If they go down this route of extending the Evening News, then it should become double-headed again. Also, I hope this doesn’t mean any changes to ‘News at Ten’, ie moving it too 22:30!

That was 2005 wasn’t it?. a phone in was included too. What time did the regional opt out appear?

The regional news appeared at around 1:10pm, and it was 15 minutes long as they were accounting for the 3:00pm News which had been axed in favour.
Sounds like a terrible idea, I'm not sure they need a bloated news bulletin in that part of the schedule or that they need to push early peak even later. I would think it would mean changes at 10pm.
I'm more interested in what it would mean for the soaps, does Corrie stick with 7.30pm & 8.30pm with Emmerdale moving to 8pm? Or Emmerdale to 7.30pm with an hour of Corrie at 8pm? Or does Corrie go to 5 days a week?

So where does this leave the regional news then, surely it's impossible for this to happen as ITV has to fit in the Regional news and then the main National news.

Apparently - The regional news will stay in the same spot 6-6:30 and then the national news 6:30-7:30.

It’s obviously all ifs and buts right now, but if it’s true then it’s a bit of a win win for ITV, as it’s extra News within peak time hours and it’s one less commission for those same hours at a fraction of the cost of a new show/series outright. Maybe a plan to over commit to News on main weekdays and cut back elsewhere?
I could certainly see Emmerdale being more of a fixture for 8:00pm than 7:00pm, rather than pre-empting Coronation Street.
The launch of TalkTV has also sprung to mind here, as it’s big guns, ie Piers Morgan will be on at peak time, but I can’t see ITV running scared of the channel.

Considering 5 News recently extended their 5pm bulletin for an hour which has made it a harder watch, I can't see how ITV News will make a 60 minute bulletin which crosses over into peak time work?
I really don't want to see the work ITV News have done in recent years to restore their credibility as a must watch news bulletin to pad out 30 mins of the Evening News with fluff. It's bad enough some of the ITV regional bulletins have become one big plug for the latest ITV prime-time reality format.
I think moving regional news to 7PM would be better than extending the Evening News, as it probably will be padded out with features nobody is really interested in. Sure they could fill 6PM with something fairly cheap with a decent audience for after The Chase?
