Was Sky 1 not strictly known as Sky 1 HD for a period?

I'm sure there was a period around ten years ago where all references to Sky 1 on air were known as Sky 1 HD from the logo to continuity to promotions even though the SD channel was and still is around. Can anyone confirm that?

Yep. Even hosts of their original programming had to say "Welcome to _______ on Sky1HD!"

Yep, it was a common trend - however, over the past 5-6 years broadcasters have phased it out. It's a bit like saying that the programme is available in colour/stereo - which of course is standard and sounds outdated.

When the "HD" variants were being launched across all channel operators. Was I the only one who thought it didn't* need the whole "...on ChannelHD" spiel. For me as I saw it, just a simple "Catch all new Hawaii Five-0. Monday's at 9 on Sky1 and Sky1HD".

I think Sky in the end removed 'HD' branding just before NOW TV launched their 1080p boost package, this meant that NOW didn't have to use a 'Sky Gubbins HD' branded feed which would then be downcoverted to 720p for their basic customers.

The worst was when they applied the Sky channel HD branding to the SD counterpart too, with no mention of "on Sky 1" just Sky 1 HD" on promos (of course, since the SD is just a downscale of the HD feed).

Why don't they just use it "Sky channel and in HD", instead of repeating the channel twice?

I could understand BBC One and BBC One HD since these channels in the nations did not have the same schedule, but not the Sky channels

I guess HD was a big deal when it launched. I certainly remember going around to a friends house just to see the new Sky HD box they had just had fitted. The EPG had a special section of about eight HD channels if I remember right. Sky One HD was a big one! It seemed amazing at the time.

It wasn't just on air.

There was a period where all Sky channels were known as "Sky x HD" more or less everywhere, including on websites and social media accounts.

Before they merged all the social media accounts and closed the individual channel accounts, some of them still had website addresses with HD in the name as a legacy of this right until the end. I think facebook.com/skyartshd was an example of this.

Whilst I'd say they are big selling points, I don't think the same hype/excitement is really there for them as there was with HD - many people (myself included) don't see the point in 4K and higher resolutions, because the difference, visually, is minuscule, whereas SD vs HD still look very significantly different from each other, even today.

I feel like there's still a noticeable, if small, difference between HD and 4K, it's mainly just about making smaller details more clearer now rather than giving an upgrade to the whole thing.

I assume Sky's policy to refer to everything as Sky xxx HD was simply for marketing the HD add on. Constantly drilling the term 'HD' into everyone's minds and making you think you were missing out on something by watching these HD channels in SD, persuading you to eventually subscribe.
