Agreed, although at points last night's show did feel like a glorified/televised Years & Years concert, I've seen very little but positive comment on social media about the message that putting him in the NYE slot sends

Agree on both counts regarding Mrs Brown and a show that doesn't make the top 10 shouldn't be renewed for 5 years with a guaranteed Christmas Day slot. Indeed if they want to give it a chance to rebuild it's ratings it may fair better elsewhere.

Correct if I am wrong but was this Christmas the first time Mrs Brown has been outside the top 10 since it has been on Christmas Day on BBC One, some years it was even number 1 but I agree it is past it's best now (although I thought this year was an improvement on the past few years). Surely Not Going Out, Ghosts or Would I Lie to You? could go in the slot around 10pm, after all Mrs Brown's Boys wasn't that far ahead of a Vicar of Dibley repeat from 2006.

If I recall, the Halloween special had a joke from Brendan about MBB's flagging ratings, so even they know it's peaked.

For 3 out of the last 4 years ITV have just thrown on the same Bond film on NYE. They switched to Skyfall in 2020. Zero effort as usual.

I think the concerts aren't quite the same being pre-recorded, compared to when live. Naturally I assume the reason for this is due to Covid. However pre-midnight it didn't feel like there had been hardly any attempt to even record 'as live', with some unsubtle edits between songs. I didn't watch post-midnight to see what that part was like.

Hopefully when there's no longer Covid precautions in place the concerts can return to being live. I used to like how for the final song pre-midnight the performer would work their way from the stage to a balcony looking out on London. It did rely though on the performer keeping to schedule, which I dare say is why they used to have a quick interview in between.

It did feel more slick being pre recorded but I agree it might been better being recorded as live.

I think for next New Year the BBC need to go for a more well known artist. Olly Alexander doesn’t have any well known hits and was a poor choice for a night where the audience leans older.

4.3 Million for the first part of the New Year's & Year's concert and 4.8 Million for part 2.

11 million for the fireworks as well, agree but on the point Olly Alexander while very talented wouldn't be universally known like previous concerts featuring Queen & Adam Lambert, Gary Barlow, Robbie Williams, Bryan Adams etc and all seemed to have bigger viewing figures.

Agreed. I only dipped into Olly Alexander for a few minutes and whilst I don't mind a few songs, it didn't really feel NYE material especially with that filmic look and non-live feel. It does need to go back to being live. Last year was depressing with Alicia Keys, and the year before with Craig David wasn't that great either. They need to focus on iconic artists that appeal across age ranges for this kind of gig. I'm surprised actually someone like Elton John, having had hits with Dua Lipa and Ed Sheeran this year wasn't approached, or maybe even Rod Stewart, with having a new album out?

We had it on in the background during our New Year's cheese and wine on Zoom at our desks in Whitehall (humour). I felt it was a bit naff overall, but that's mainly because I don't really like pop music. But if its liked by people, then that's good with me. I hope 2022's concert has Muse.
