The end of binge watch and stripped drama?

Ninja Warrior being axed was announced in August after the pandemic hit but it wasn't exactly getting great ratings before that and if a sixth series had been in the works it would have been filmed in 2019.

It was quietly not recorded rather than announced as axed, so the door wasn't completely closed even though as you say it was apparent pre-covid it would be rested at least. I think though when you look at the physical gameshow formats ITV have tried in recent years Ninja Warrior is by far their most successful, and unlike other versions I don't think they pay out a penny in prize money either compared to The Void with a quite winnable £25k weekly jackpot and The Cube often giving away £20k+ an episode.

(Not sure what this has to do with binge watching though - looks like threads may have got crossed at some point)

Going back to the topic [it started from the post about ninja warrior being axed on the first page], i don’t think binge watching has ended. I do it often on shows like line of duty [i’ll watch it live at the time, then binge watch the dvd box set when it releases], and my parents also binge watch shops so as to avoid the ad breaks via dvr. Don’t think there’s a reason why binge watching would stop, that being said its up to the programme maker to decide if it’s better to release on a schedule or all at once. Usually that would be driven by the type of story they want to tell, ie whether suspenseful cliffhangers are a good idea.

Never binged anything, seems like a waste to me. Just wait a week - plenty of other shows to watch!

With the stripped dramas on ITV I generally waited until the end of the week and then binged over the weekend.

However, the Noel Clarke drama Viewpoint didn't broadcast the final episode. Although it was available on the ITV Hub for 48 hours before the whole series was deleted.

It depends on the show but having binged Brassic over a couple nights when it came out a few weeks ago I kind of realised that such a comedy drama really didn't work back to back. Watch it weekly and the characters doing basically the same thing and getting into the same scrapes week in, week out, is quite funny and a perfect midweek pick me up. Watch them back to back though and you realise how formulaic such shows are.

It probably works best with shows which have a story running over the series than ones which are more self contained with just a few loose stories tying it all together.

I don’t think weekly or stripped TV will end anytime soon but it does of course depend on the program same with binge watching. Something from the archives like spooks or life on Mars can work well been binge watched.
However that won’t work for what can be described as event TV like spring/autumn watch which works best as stripped over a few weeks. It all depends on the program though.

On this theme E4 have been advertising Alex Rider, a teen spy type drama, as starting tonight at 8pm. As with most of their US drama I expected it to swiftly end up in an overnight slot - but didn't realise that is indeed their plan as they are airing all 8 episodes tonight from 8pm to 3.45am.

Guess it's a compromise on boxsetting it on All4 after episode 1 so it gets a linear broadcast immediately, though probably be better split over two nights really.

Alex Rider is actually a British show and debuted on Amazon Prime (though it was made by Sony). First season Prime, second IMDb TV.

Surprised that appeared outside of Prime quite quickly, since the first season was only put on Prime last June, June 2020. Unless its one of those "Prime teaser" things, for which E4 is probably an ideal audience for that sort of show.

The X Factor, Take Me Out, Ninja Warrior, Alien Fun Capsule, Through The Keyhole and Supermarket Sweep weren't coming back.

Has Supermarket Sweep's axing been confirmed by ITV? Shame if so- the iTV1 daytime version with Rylan was much better than his first attempt in iTV2 primetime.
