Sajid Javid doing the rounds today a day later than planned - and now talking about further restrictions rather than the original plan to celebrate the anniversary of the first public vaccinations.

I believe he told Sky he was too upset by the video to appear yesterday, which hardly washes.
How long have these morning ministerial rounds been a thing - obviously been far more important over the last couple of years than usual, but have they always been done or were they bought in more recently?

Haven't they been a thing since the days of TVam?
Can't say if they were referred to in the same way back then, but seem to remember that the value of putting ministers in people's living rooms on a morning when they are busy and consequently off guard was seen as useful by you-know-who.

Well, the "big 8.10" has always been a thing on the Today programme, although they always said that government ministers were eager to appear on that because Thatcher used to listen to it. It perhaps wasn't so prominent a thing on other programmes but in the One Day In The Life Of Television book, which goes behind the scenes of all programmes broadcast on 1st November 1988, in the section on Breakfast Time Jeremy Paxman mentions that David Mellor, then Health Minister on the day prescription charges were in the news, was coming on as "the government's nominated flack-catcher". I think the difference is they're now much higher profile, as you say, but there was seemingly always a minister on call every day to do the rounds of any programme that wanted them.

BBC Breakfast as such empty chaired the usual ministerial interview just after 7.30am by showing the empty Westminster interview position on one of their screens. I'm assuming GMB and Sky News may have done something similar as per the last time this happened.

Apparently, it was supposed to be Grant Shapps doing the media round this morning. However, he backed out when Johnson refused to give him more details about the party.

Somewhat ironic to have a Tory Political Broadcast tonight saying how well it's all going. I thought non-election PPBs had been scrapped though?

On multiple occasions tonight the ITV announcer has promoted Peston, which they wouldn’t usually do.
