Top of the Pops on BBC Four

One of which a pretty blatant edited in retake between performances too. Smith must've seemed like a safe bet with her DJ credentials but she just comes across far too nervy. A bit of a shame, as if she overcame those I think she would've had a more tolerable hosting style than Franklin and Dortie.

By the time you get later into 1992 and 1993, there's some editions where literally only the link after the first song and the link into the credits was in vision.

I've seen that in a few shows, most particularly the Michael Hurll-produced editions from July 92, there aren't even out of vision announcements linking at least one or two songs - very rare for TOTP to do that, but it has happened at a few random points in its history.
Elayne not appearing on screen (and being captioned) until 11 minutes into the episode really does highlight some of the strange decisions made in this era.

Admittedly it was the same with Tony Dortie on a previous episode, but at least viewers would have known who he was from the previous weeks' episodes when they heard his voiceovers, whereas viewers wouldn't have been familiar with Elayne at all, so waiting until over a third of the way into the episode to actually let viewers know who this new voice is seems bizarre.

Not as strange a decision as having Neil Sedaka on though...

Makes Adrian Rose's decision to block his episodes seem even more ridiculous when you realise he probably spends of all 30 seconds on screen on each of his episodes, barely time to even register his presence.
Some of the live singing tonight in the first show was tough to sit through. Thank mercy for Phil Collins.

At six minutes long though that performance was still tough to sit through too, despite Collins being an old pro and having considerably more experience singing live over the years. Surely among the longest TOTP performances ever?
Wait until we get Jesus in Suburbia if the repeats ever get to 2006.

Or even next week with the full Black or White video if that counts.
I guess posting a clip from your Pops presenting days on social media does *not* necessarily mean that you're happy for the Beeb to repeat your episodes...

However crazy one considers his decision, and however disappointed one is by it, one has to respect it. It's what he wants and that's that.

On Wednesday evening Mark Franklin tweeted about Adrian in the present tense: "He is a lovely man, he has his reasons" while Tony Dortie tweeted about him in the past tense: "He was a pleasure to work with and a very smart lad". I wonder to what extent has he kept in touch with the other Year Zero presenters?

(For the record, he presented only one episode with Mark and three with Tony.)
"And we've had five races so far this year - Brazil, Argentina, Imola, Schumacher and Monaco!" -- Murray Walker, 1995
They certainly did work their way through the presenters.
@Brekkietweets
Though Tony did clarify last night that he doesn't know any more about the Adrian Rose/Woolfe situation than the rest of us, presumably him and Mark's tweets are just them trying to guess how he might be thinking, so we shouldn't read too much into them.
Tony Dortie on Twitter:

Quote:Adrian Rose doesn't deserve any of the negativity or Streisand Syndromesque stuff it's something from 30 years ago, the clip lives on.

Forgive me but who was the first to mention Streisand Syndrome?

I guess. I'm a fan so I don't mind. It's funny it never feels like it goes on too long when I listen to it, didn't realise the album version was over 6 minutes, it's one of those songs that feels like it earns its running time through the story.*

But I can appreciate if you're not a fan you'd want something else after 2 or 3 minutes.

*As opposed to the album it's off which is far too long and apart from this song and a few others features a lot of boring dreck unfortunately…

Just watched the second show from last night (07/11/1991)

- Some nice staging tonight, I liked Crowded House responding by saying "it's grim down south". We don't seem to be at the point yet where every act has to shout "Come on Top of the Pops!" at the start of their performance though

- Live vocals a lot better but it definitely should have been an option rather than enforced, or at least support some of the poorer live singers with a recorded vocal playing too

- Really strange presentation choices. I actually think opening the show out-of-vision works really well, it's like bam straight into the first performance. Then you should have a proper in-vision link afterwards to welcome you to the show. Which they did, but with Mark only, which I thought was really odd, because Elayne Smith doesn't really get a proper introduction and you barely see her through the rest of the show. Then after Belinda Carlisle you get to see the audience walking away behind Mark to the other stage. Messy.

Quite a few people on various places have mentioned it, presumably Tony's seen some of it. And to be fair, that is exactly what's happened- in blocking the episodes, he's drawn more attention to them and him than if he'd just left alone. Not his intention of course, but invoking the streisand effect by definition is unintentional.

It was the point that Dortie had first mentioned Streisand Syndrome which is now being used everywhere in connection to this.

You are totally correct that if Rose/Woolfe wanted a quiet time with relation to TOTP shows then he would have got very little attention if they had been shown as opposed to now. Especially as he posted a video on his Instagram account last year, that annoys me a bit.

The cat's out of the bag even if he did allow them to be shown now, he's not going to be able to win whatever he does now, the fact he tried to block them and the negative attention he recieved as a result is always going to be there even if he does decide to allow them. You'd think by now people would know just to let something pass even if you aren't entirely happy with it rather than try to block it, it always opens a can of worms.

Though with some of the comments I've seen aimed at him online, I could understand why he wouldn't want to change his mind and double down on his decision- just look at the replies to @TOTPFacts tweet on the subject last night for example. Streisand effect again though- he wouldn't have had those comments aimed at him if he had just allowed them to be shown. I certainly don't condone the abuse he's been getting or the people who'll inevitably be hassling his social media, emails and elsewhere though.
Might help if he broke his silence and acknowledged this, but it's up to him I suppose.
