Rebooted 'Pop Idol'?
#1
Pop idol on itv lasted Just 2 series the American version and others have lasted far longer some still going now.
Why was itv eager to move on from pop idol so soon as ratings where still good at the time???

Was it pressure from cowel to launch xfactor from his own tv company or?
Who actually owned the rights back then to pop idol and made the show for itv?

When itv launched xfactor why didn't anther channel bid for pop idol format rights?

Strictly is still popular now and has hardly altered format apart from judges etc
Xfactor format was messed with too much and too many judge changes each season speeding up it's decline.
If strictly had messed with the format each season and kept changing Judge
line ups bet it wouldn't be on air now either .

As itv now lacks a show to screen against strictly and doubtful have any challenge to strictly until I'm a celebrity is screened in Saturdays nights .
Would a reboot of pop idol actually work ?? Not as long show run as original a far more compact less contestants maybe late autumn to mid November series.

Back to basics audition in a room and no categories for groups or males, female like xfactor ...just back to each contestant through to battle each other live like pop idol was originally. Keep it simple plan etc.

Itv outside live football against strictly is getting under 3 million live viewers. Even if pop idol reboot got 6 million still big increase and be alternative to strictly. Advertising must want an autumn big Saturday night show especially in lead up to Christmas sales etc .

Pop Idol would feel incredibly dated compared to the likes of The Voice.

I've always found The Voice to be interminably dull and joyless. At least Pop Idol had Ant and Dec

And I doubt a revival of it would. I think there was talk of a revival a few years back (probably on C5 I suspect) but just not sure how it would go. In comparison to what followed it was quite dull really, but then such a show stripped back to basics might have it's appeal.

I think the show could still work if they followed the successful ABC revival with Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan as judges, but maybe not have the age range quite as restrictive.

Having watched the recent series on Netflix, my only criticism was that there were too many rounds between auditions and live shows. As you had the Hollywood Week, Showstoppers, Top 24 and Top 16 which took up 8 episodes before the Live Shows even began.
However there is much more of a focus of contestants playing their own instruments and singing original songs which did make a difference in showing the strongest singers.

The ideal scenario would be to have say 4-5 weeks of auditions, max 2 weeks of the middle section, and then into the live shows. For judges, you could have someone like Anne-Marie, Dua Lipa or Becky Hill for the young female pop star, Scott Mills as host of the Radio 1 Chart Show, or Greg James as Radio 1 DJ, and then an elder statesman like Elton John for the unpredictable headline grabbing comments.

Part of the appeal of Pop Idol, Popstars prior to it and The X Factor afterwards, was viewers being able to make a pop star. This was easy to do at first as they could manipulate the charts by buying the records. As the years have gone by and music sales have improved with the introduction of downloads and streaming to the charts, it has become very difficult to achieve. Enthusiasm from viewers is also lacking because new contestants have nothing unique about them.

The Voice suffers from all of the above aided by the fact that it tries to appeal to a younger, singer-songwriter market, which isn't what the average viewer wants.

I Can See Your Voice and Walk The Line don't promise anything and are the future of singing shows even if they won't have the same longevity as The X Factor. There is a market for another, particularly with BGT on the wane, but it can't be about making a pop star as that ship has sailed.
