I’m not sure why they broadcasted from Shanghai. but they even had their own special endboard on the screen behind Stewart. not bad now. but the bbc news logo is in the wrong place. Wish they made a full sequence

It wasn’t during the 2008 Olympics was it?

London Tonight also came from Bejing that week (With a specially commissioned theme), their reasoning was the Olympics was next coming to London in 2012 and it was about how smoothly it went in China.

Can't see that happening in these days of a firmly belt-tightened BBC!

Looking at the tributes to him the day after he left, there doesn't seem to be anything what so ever to suggest he was forced out or left for any reason other than he felt it was time for him to retire.
It was even mentioned that he had always said that he wanted to just leave with no fuss one day, and that is exactly what he did. Sometimes a presenter leaving gets almost too much coverage, and that can take a programme off track. Fair play to him, and I hope he has a long and enjoyable retirement.

Quite an extravagance. Unthinkable now, of course. (Imagine, say, South Today coming from e.g. Johannesburg if a major sporting event was being held in South Africa)
