The reason they're able to do this is because they're already exceeding their required quota of news, so they're able to just do half an hour for a couple of weeks at least.

They might be OK until the end of the year. Their primetime quota is 120 hours a year. 39 weeks of 1830 programmes (2.5 hrs a week) is 97.5 hours a week and the remainder can probably be covered by evening news headlines. That's a rather rough calculation, but I presume C5's plan is that once the 1830 news goes, it goes for good

Channel 5 are looking to improve their all day share by investing in both the 4pm slot and 6.30pm. I reckon we'll probably a rotation of Eggheads, Watercolour Challenge and other new programmes from January onwards.

Of course, Five are currently required to produce half an hour of news within Ofcom's definition of primetime (6-11pm)*, which is why we're in the current situation where they have two bulletins in rather quick succession. They're currently arguing that the viewing figures for the 6.30 bulletin illustrate the audience don't want it in that slot and they'd be better off doing an hour at five which may be out of primetime but gets a bigger audience.

* Of course, when ITV moved News at Ten to eleven in 1999, the teatime news moved to 6.30 to meet this requirement, so now they have two news bulletins within primetime which wasn't the case until twenty years ago.

The primetime news has never done well for them. Merging the two bulletins makes sense for them commercially while allowing to keep their yearly news quota.

Just saw a trailer for Eggheads - Interesting they gave the date (4th October), but no time. I'd have thought they'd have started promoting that with a little more than a week to go, no?

Are they going back to the 90s? They used to have Whittle and 100% in the early days. It may have been a long time ago, but Channel 5 does actually have history with quizzes.

And some, including the ones you mentioned, were good fun even though they looked cheap.

Re. the 90s, just a couple of weeks ago, C5 showed Red Shoe Diaries then dropped it after a few nights.
