The Viacom CBS submission says 'It is our intention to continue to broadcast the headlines in Peak Time (currently 1955 and 2055) to fulfil our revised Peak Time obligation'.
There appears to be no overall reduction in hours of news, they are just asking that the majority of the requirement be moved out of peak time to 5pm.
I think they have a good argument that the 18:30 bulletin is not additive to PSB due to the overlap with BBC Regional / National news at that time and that the move to 5pm would provide a block of PSB news across C5, BBC, ITV & C4 from 5pm - 8pm.
An hour long is interesting given the current 2 shows are pretty much the same show repeated, so I’m curious as to how they’ll fill essentially another half hour of news. I suspect it’ll be yet another outlet for the same faces to come on and argue / debate about stuff, but I hope to be proven wrong.

There is certainly logic to it - would be good to see them return to hourly updates for as much of the day as possible firstly as their point of difference but mainly to offer something which simply is no longer offered in TV. It can be a useful tool as well to bring in a channel hopping audience to their programming, finding a news update whilst other channels are on commercials and then sticking with the channel.

Eggheads certainly makes more sense at 6.30pm than in the 7pm hour. I agree Home and Away being dropped from the main channel at teatime wouldn't be too surprising - they've always treated it as more of a burden than an asset since Neighbours came along.

The current 5 News is never appointment to view for me, but when I have seen it, I have noticed that they do have some good reports, and make a very decent programme on a small budget.
I agree with what was said earlier that at launch they had a brilliant, unique selling point of being live from the newsroom, with the hourly updates throughout the day cementing it as a rapid reporting news service, you knew that (with the exception of films) if anything happened it would be covered in the next hour’s update.
A return to a newsroom location and hourly updates would be a good way forward imo. I’m always surprised that they don’t feature regular headlines as part of Jeremy Vine, and could be a good way of extending the programme a little to fill the schedule more.
As for an hour length main bulletin, if they’re clever about it they could extend the report lengths slightly, continue with their talking points that they like to do, hire a sports presenter to cover sports news for 5-7 minutes, potentially discuss entertainment news at the tail end of the programme and feature a couple of 60-90 second round ups of other stories taking place in the UK and around the world; all of which would bulk it out without too many changes, plus the running time would no doubt be 53-55 minutes with the weather and pollen count to follow afterwards.
FYI, I also love the desk, less so the rest of the studio.

It wouldn't surprise me if Home and Away went completely at teatime. It's not rated very well for a while now and when they rationed episodes during the start of the crisis it's notable they dropped the teatime showing completely, but kept Neighbours on. As Brekkie says, Neighbours seems the more valued asset nowadays.
