The All new Look North Yorks and ITV Calendar thread
Meridian MR post_id=33062 time= user_id=1002 Wrote:For ITV on satellite these days, their decisions will be more to do with advertising, rather than them just wanting to match their rival’s news regions, which are editorially more rigid.

When selling advertising, they will say that a region reaches a certain amount of viewers and charge varying prices depending on the region size and which towns will be reached, etc.

For example: Advertising-wise, it makes business sense to allocate well-off swathes of Surrey, Essex, Herts, etc, to ITV London (regardless of whether these areas are thoroughly covered on the London region’s news or not). From the ITV website (link below): “ITV London offers brands the unique opportunity to target affluent Londoners around the nation’s favourite shows”.

Mansfield and Newark in Nottinghamshire are in the East Midlands, geographically and politically. However, the decision of ITV allocating Yorkshire East to those areas on satellite is presumably beneficial to them as a business and to advertisers.

It's clear ITV's advertising regions don't match the editorial areas of the regional news bulletins. Anglia covers Luton, Stevenage and Southend for news, but for advertising, they're in the London region. Luton and Southend even have Anglia relays!

While ITV News London's news area is considerably smaller than the advertising and coverage area.

I was watching a 1980 edition of Thames News on YouTube last week when they used to cover most of Kent from Bluebell Hill before it was moved into the South/South East region and was there any news or weather for Kent? No.
James Webster was credited in the 6pm announcement tonight for the first time alongside Katy and they again captioned both presenters which something they only do before this week in the short bulletins.
Former Calendar presenter and later MP Austin Mitchell has died

Write that down in your copybook now
Good to see lots of archive footage and some old Calendar presenters tonight paying tribute to Austin Mitchell. The presenters included: Geoff Druett, Alan Hardwick and Christine Talbot.
I wasn't born until after he became an MP but the one clip I remember was his meeting a "champion tassle twirler" RIP

I have found a clip of when Austin hosted Calendar as a guest presenter in September 2002, but I think he only presented the lighter features due to his status as an MP.

From memory that was more of an intro piece - at some point he did an anniversary report about one of the awful mine accidents he had reported in the 1970s. There was also a lovely report when he left the House of Commons, clearing his office and his associated memories.

Ian White apologised to East Yorks and Lincs viewers at the start of the Leeds bulletin this evening. They managed to include a Lincoln story though.
And there was a cock up on Look North Yorkshire as when the weather came on, the closing titles played out instead. However, the weather was shown and after the weather the closing titles played (due to time issues) instead of going back to Ian.

Also, I noticed the weather map only included the Yorkshire places on the map, so obviously too late to include East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire place names.
The forecast will have been recorded many hours ago, probably around lunchtime

There was another quick blast of the closing music mid-way through today’s lunchtime bulletin. Is there someone at BBC Leeds with an itchy finger? Wink
Name astons made a return on tonight’s Look North Leeds bulletin
On tonight's Hull bulletin - Leeds news.
They covered a house fire in Collingham, Nottinghamshire a few years ago. what was going on in Leeds?
