Huw wasn’t the obvious choice when he was appointed as the lead presenter back in the early 00s. They might do the same again, croxall, Boulos, Hakim, Preston could all be a possibility.
I don’t know why Martine Croxall fans want her to be the lead presenter. There is no room for any of her quirky bits that makes her so popular on the network news. The most you get from Huw is a slight raise of an eyebrow every few weeks!
^^^ Good point. In a way, it's a very strict , limited job that doesn't have the joys of rolling news coverage and long shifts. Of course the money and ''prestige'' is what it's all about.
I don't see BBC making any surprise choices like those suggested. The pool of regular national news presenters is already very wide.

I think those suggesting some kind of current affairs/interview show may be making a good call - his background was a political correspondent after all. In fact, weren't there some rumours about Marr maybe moving on a few weeks back - he'd be a good fit there and its certainly a different slot to late nights.
Huw's charm has always been an ability to mix being authoritative and approachable, although the BBC still has a few other good presenters who fit that bill - Clive Myrie (though may be difficult balancing the Mastermind job), Jane Hill (a very skilled rolling news presenter, but deserving of a promotion after 24 years), could Amroliwala be tempted back from BBC World News?
I'm not sure how we'll tell if he's made a decision, but a guest appearance on something like HIGNFY is usually a sign that BBC News presenters are looking for pastures new.

Much as I like Ben Boulos, there's no way he'd get the Ten.
I'm sure Clive Myrie could easily fit News at 10 and Mastermind, the latter only records for a couple of months a year and Paxman managed to do both Newsnight and University Challenge for a long time so it's not unusual.
If Huw leaves, I could see Clive Myrie as the next main host.

Regarding the BBC salary stuff being in the public eye, I don’t think Huw ever gets any abuse regarding his salary, it’s usually all aimed at Gary Lineker.
Christian Fraser is a name that hasn’t been mentioned and could be a good call. Since Katy Kay left he hasn’t had a permanent slot and I think would be a hit with the domestic audience.

Although the Ten is seen as a flagship bulletin I can't help wondering whether the BBC might be tempted when the time comes to have some who presents on the News Channel from 10pm until the handover to World News.

Yes that’s a good idea, something like the ten news hour until 11 and then newsday takes over maybe.
It won't be a name unfamilar to viewers on BBC One, it'll be someone viewers already know
And by that I mean someone the average person knows. Presenting the Saturday lunchtime bulletin once a month or BBC Breakfast on 4 Sundays in 2019 doesn't count.
I agree, Christian Fraser would be a great fit.
