I've seen bits of Nigel Farage's show on YouTube and while I don't agree with his politics or his views, he's a very good presenter and it's a shame that he has decided to continue with this type of programming rather than do a Portillo and branch out into non political type shows.

I think he’s far too divisive a figure to be able to make a sudden transition to a gentle documentary presenter. And I couldn’t see any of the major broadcasters taking him on without getting a huge amount of flak.
Yes ‘Great English Channel Boat Trips’ has a nice ring to it.

Yes, you can separate the politics with someone like Portillo, he’s also quite happy to make himself look stupid. I think with Farage his politics would instantly alienate half of any potential audience. I actually think that’s less of a problem with an opinion based show for him, because you can watch those without having to like the host.

I find it interesting that Portillo managed to successfully reinvent himself as a broadcaster, you may not agree with his political views but he's excellent when he is talking to people on various programmes and genuinely shows interest in the things they're talking about and as you say, he's willing to make a fool out of himself.

Pretty amazing and disturbing how just over 4,400 messages on Twitter can cause such a reversal.

No matter what you think about the content of GB News, the content is Twitter is infinitely more poisonous.
Whilst I do not disagree about Twitter being fairly toxic, you're making the assumption that Sainsbury's are incapable of making their own decisions. Of course it is entirely possible that they were concerned about their brand being placed alongside content and made the decision to remove it without even being aware of comments on Twitter or campaign groups.

You could well be right. Interesting that Sainsburys actually didn't say that they'd pulled their advertising but that their current campaign has ended.

The people behind these campaigns (whether on the left or right) don't really represent the mainstream view held by the public.

But 4,400 Tweets is next to nothing as a proportion of the UK population. To make decisions (if that's what actually happened) based upon the prospect of losing custom whose total spend wouldn't even represent a rounding error in accounting is strange leadership.

Farage really is the Roland Rat of GBN.

It’s just the other hours (especially the daytime) which are problematic

As always, Twitter is not representative of the general population. 99+% of people won't know this 'campaign' even exists - I certainly didn't until today.
True, but they shouldn't be dismissed out of hand either. Sainsbury's customer base and the twitterverse are not mutually exclusive, and it wasn't Twitter pressurising Sainsbury's to pull the ads, it was a section, a small section granted, of their customer base.

Absolutely right though if GB News go down the route of using a show and host to repeatedly attack a much respected life saving charity that they are held to account for it - and if you're an advertiser funded channel it's likely that it'll be the advertisers who ultimately hold you to account, whether that's by directly pulling ad campaigns as a result or by pulling ad campaigns as a result of low viewership due to viewers not buying into such low standards of broadcasting.

You are right Brekkie but an attack is only an attack is you perceive it as such.

Stop Funding Hate and Led By Donkeys are organisations sincere in their beliefs that immigration to the UK should essentially be unrestricted. This is a minority opinion but these organisations describe disagreement with their beliefs as hate, xenophobia, facism, Nazism - take your pick - because they want to portray their opponents as gammon Brexiteer extremists to play to their own audience.

The RNLI have rescued asylum seekers from boats and the hands of traffickers as they should. Pointing that out should not be contentious and neither should highlighting the political activities of the organisation (or any organisation for that matter) in a democracy where speech is free. This is not a case of "calling out" something, in my opinion.

The Sainsbury's stunt is brilliantly executed opportunism on these organisation's part. I think however Sainsbury's shown poor leadership if indeed they pulled advertising in response.

GB News have pulled a blinder getting him on ratings wise. Now, what to do about the remaining 17 hours a day?

Not entirely comfortable with a very small group putting such pressure onto Sainsburys and winning. In fact I wish companies would have the balls to tell them to bugger off, it’s not exactly going to damage them.

The ultimate test is what happens after. If it is allowed then that is a good thing. The one view point only which seems to be adopted in the mainstream channels regarding subjects is very sterile at times.

Alternative view: it very publicly reinforces the impression there’s a tug-of-war going on between the regional reporters who signed up for GBN believing they were going to be given full-throated support to tell stories from their communities, and the London presenters who have a clear agenda to push.

It also just looks highly unprofessional - and while you might think the tweets of BBC or Sky journalists are anodyne, at least they don’t undermine the reputation of their respective employers by going at it like rats in a sack.

No it just accepts that people have opinions and to pretend a whole company all think alike isn't healthy. If the major players were serious about this (a broadcasting having one view and all obeying it), they would stop a certain well known presenter who presents sports and others like them. They haven't. Any employee of such broadcasters are unprofessional and bring the broadcaster into disrepute by any tweet which is outside the official position of the said broadcaster, using your logic.

It is a bit silly as well as the majority of companies also run advertisements on Youtube and the ads run on almost any video. I have seen major companies advertise on Russian propaganda videos.

I don’t think Portillo and other politicians of that era were that controversial. I think with everything being so divisive over the past few years, it’ll be a lot more difficult for any current or recent politicians to make the transition into being broad-appeal presenters.

Are you sure about that? As far as I know neither of those organisations have expressed that belief.

Led by Donkeys is primarily an anti-Brexit group who campaign by showing up political hypocracy. It's name comes from World War 1 where the soldiers were said to have been lions led by donkeys. Its a comment on the inadequacies of leadership.

Stop Funding Hate is an organisation that is anti hate and divisive speech in newspapers. It does that by pressurising companies to withdraw their advertising.

Neither have any policies or beliefs about immigration policy, let alone one about unrestricted immigration. I'm sure the likes of GB News would like you to believe otherwise though...
Ultimately as far as GB News is concerned all publicity is good publicity and they're clearly not at the point where they're unable to fill ad breaks - and based on the quality of ads on the likes of ITV3, ITV4 and the UKTV channels, plus numerous other digital channels, not much can be concluded by the types of ads that appear on those channels. Indeed you'd expect the bigger brands to focus more exclusively on the bigger channels than on the dozens of digital channels fighting for 1-2% of the TV audience.
