Nearly a third of waking hours spent on TV and streaming, Ofcom says

UK adults spent nearly a third of their waking hours watching TV and online video content in 2020, according to a report from regulator Ofcom.

Daily average screen time, spurred on by pandemic lockdowns, was a daily average of five hours and 40 minutes, up 47 minutes on the previous year.

For the first time, more households had a Netflix subscription than a paid TV account such as cable or satellite.

So that's pretty much all their leisure time.

We spend a third of our lives asleep, that's eight hours a day, most of us go to work (say, eight hours a day near enough), then the other eight are non-work hours. Which we spend on our arses in front of Netflix. Marvellous.

And that's a daily average of 5hrs 40 mins, so there are some even higher.

Our household average is about 90-100 mins per day. Friday or Saturday might be a movie, so that might total 150 mins. Some days we don't put the telly on at all

TBF a lot of the other leisure activities like the theatre or going to concerts were absent for most of 2020 so it's not surprised people watched a lot of TV and streaming. I wonder if we'll see a drop in viewing this year and next year? I know I've personally have watched less TV in the last few months in favour of going out again.

I often nod off during the BBC 10pm news, only to be woken up by the sound effects on the so called 'Red Screen of Death' in place of the regional news

It's how I judge most dramas - if I stay awake I'll watch episode 2.

Always wondered how BARB account for sleeping viewers but I guess as you have to press a button when you enter the room and then one when you leave that sleeping viewers count.

Realistically if I judge shows based on how often I've fallen asleep in front of them I would have probably run out of programmes ages ago.
