RTE have always cut back on their television news during the summer months, this is nothing new, and certainly not to do with Covid.
RTE way back in the seventies used to start their television day at 6.00pm in the summer months. By the 1980s, when they had 2 channels operating, RTE One used to never start until around 4.30pm sometimes even later. RTE only launched a proper lunchtime news in October 1989 - their One O'Clock News, however come summer 1990 and for the summers of 1991, 1992 they axed the bulletin for the summer, with RTE One not kicking off until around 2.30pm. It was only in the mid 1990s that RTE chose to instead provide a shortened One O'Clock News.

I'd see that the RTÉ News youtube channel has gone through some upgrades recently with uploading their Youtube videos in 4K during the Olympics.

One wonders will they continue with Claire and Ciara, or recruit perhaps Kieran Cuddihy, current drivetime host on Newstalk. Or will they delve into their own talent pool of the likes of Gavan Reilly, Richard Chambers & Zara King

Pat Kenny is no longer with Virgin Media Ireland. He cut ties with the broadcaster meaning his Big Debate Series has now been cancelled. The Irish Mirror has reported recently that he wanted to explore other programme ideas with other broadcasters which may signal a return to RTÉ in the future. This also means that his Big Debate series won't be included in the VM Ireland Autumn/Winter schedule anymore.

Elaine on Virgin Media One has been axed and replaced with Loose Women with Elaine Crowley also moving to Ireland AM on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Not TV related but no doubt of interest to some here.
RTÉ Radio 1 has a new sound to the station, most notably a change in the main news jingle (which by the looks of this clip will replace the current theme of the News At One with Bryan Dobson) https://twitter.com/RTERadio1/status/143...90821?s=20 Hearing it on air, I can't help but feel it sounds a bit too local radio for the main national radio station. Lacks a bit of the gravitas the older one had. But that sonic imaging will no doubt get stuck in peoples heads (the entire purpose of it). A shame to hear the back of the News at One jingle which has been used on RTÉ Radio in some form or another for about 30 years. It was once the news jingle itself on the station. Perhaps This Week (Sundays 1pm) will retain it for posterity.

Agree with this, Just heard the jingle at 8 pm, It sounds like a local station jingle with elements of BBC Radio Ulster dropped in towards the final notes. Plus its 5 seconds too long. A 10-second jingle for a 90-second bulletin is overkill. Some of the other new imaging for the station is not bad. Hopefully, a few adjustments here and there will follow shortly.

Must have been one of the oldest jingles on Irish radio - dates from the early 1990s or thereabouts and as you say it was originally used for all news bulletins other than what was still Today at Five at that stage. Morning Ireland regained its own theme later and then the normal bulletin theme was changed later in the 1990s but News at One and This Week always kept it. I wonder does this also mean the end of other individual programme themes on Radio 1. Some of them date from even earlier than the 1990s! There will be war if the Liveline one is junked, it is there since the programme started in 1985 I think. Edit: seems This Week also gets a new theme, and also Rising Time (the early morning music show that airs before Morning Ireland).
