Well things have changed ever since Piers left. Most of the Oprah interview has been exposed as lies and speculation. This couple's starvation for money and attention (the latest example being Harry's memoires) has made them even less popular in the UK so by the time Morgan eventually returns, no one will even remember why he left in the first place or care for that matter.

Please, please try to refrain from expressing things which could be seen as political opinions (like this post, I think it's on the borderline), but I do agree with the sentiment. I believe the vast majority of GMB viewers (including ex-viewers) would be happy to see him back.

Piers' return seems inevitable and the only reasonable solution, for both parties.

If so then ITV’s ‘Britain Get Talking’ mental campaign is dead in the water if they have one of their presenters gaslighting somebody who has had suicidal thoughts. The optics of that for ITV would be pretty disastrous.

Still clearly some feel all morals should go out the window for an extra 250,000 viewers or so.

I don’t see why they would. Obviously it depends if any of these three would want the role full time but I wouldn’t be shocked if any of Richard Madeley, Alastair Campbell or Simon McCoy got the role full time eventually. All are personalities without being as toxic as Piers was.

Has the occasional stand in weather man been disciplined for hawking the mental health of a colleague on air? Seems it ok to go on national television and be critical of your co presenter ?

I think Piers will be back. Stranger things have happened. Karl returned to his old job in Australia on Today. There’s literally nobody else who will replace Piers.

If Piers is so irreplaceable they might as well axe the show.

I suspect the reason they're struggling to replace it is because Piers made it a toxic brand people don't want to be associated with.

I think the reason they’re finding an issue replacing him is because the entire show jumped on the Piers brand of anger and outrage with all it had. Had it remained mainly a news programme, I’m sure it would be much easier. But now the programmes success isn’t judged on its journalistic credibility and light-magazine watchability, but relies on a shock-jock clickbait style of operation. If it isn’t trending, it isn’t succeeding.

My main surprise is the complete lack of foreplanning for the past five years. We all knew Piers wasn’t going to be at GMB forever, by choice or by sacking. How they didn’t have an heir-apparent waiting in the wings I don’t know. Surely step-one of risk mitigation in this kind of environment?

Alas, he never learns and he'll never change.

For all there are some ardent Morgan fans here, I for one am thrilled he's no longer on the programme. I'd stopped watching it in March last year and I've felt able to give it another go since his departure.

The reposte to any anti-Piers comment here is always "but viewers liked him" - but that's not entirely fair - some viewers liked him, certainly, in the same way that some others couldn't bear to watch the programme while he was on it.

Let's not forget that despite Piers' constant gloating on Twitter, the one and only time that GMB received more viewers than the BBC in his tenure was in the immediate aftermath of his callous comments about mental health and the discussion with Alex Beresford which he flounced out of because he couldn't stand someone actually giving him a taste of his own medicine and challeging him on his opinons rather than just letting him rant freely into a camera for two and a half hours like he became used to over his time there. Hardly the type of content for ITV / GMB be proud of, no matter how many people tuned in to watch the farce unfold.

Let Piers shout his views loudly and repeatedly (and with an unwavering confidence not at all commensurate with his level of knowledge of the subject matter) elsewhere, and I'm sure there'll be some form of market for it, but it's not for ITV (the home of the 'Britain Get Talking' campaign) to air live every morning to workers and schoolchildren getting ready for their day.

Whilst that is bad enough and is utterly cringeworthy at best. He’s also undermined those getting silver and bronze medals as ‘losers’ and continued to be very overtly critical of a certain Duke and Duchess. Meghan and Harry shouldn’t be above criticism of course, but there’s a limit and a way to do so in a sensible manner and undermining Team GB athletes being second or third best in the world just doesn’t fit the vibe of GMB at all. So mix all that together, Piers is more likely to turn up presenting BBC Breakfast than GMB anytime soon.

GMB need to move on, no need to erase Piers from history but recognise that he’s gone and the show moves on in a similar tabloid style but perhaps without as much controversy and faux rage.
