I was thinking they could take the only live HLN shows (Morning Express and Weekend Express) to CNN Plus or simulcast them on CNN Plus. It would be nice if CNN launched a basic news service online like CBSN etc, since they don't want to do that on HLN after 11 or Noon , and CNN is more interested in opinions and beating politics to death, than doing news. A pay service is surely a strange decision, who is this for? They are hoping for someone who's a heavy news fan to want to pay money for one news channel, plus other streaming services they may have?

Here's an idea for CNN, how about a paywall version of CNNi that is totally dedicated to international news and back half hour shows that have an international outlook instead of the continual simulcasts with Domestic which would allow the pre-pandemic shows to return using streaming, so that CNN can continue to capitalise on linear viewers with their largely domestic simulcast with token CNNi output.

CNN+ is a no brainer for CNN and way overdue given the move to streaming has accelerated in the last 5 years or so. Interesting reading in that article that CNN can't just stream it's broadcast network due to "lucrative and long term deals with cable distributors". Otherwise it would make sense to just add CNN live streams to existing streaming services, eg HBO Max.

So perhaps CNN+ is just to take them over the next few years and once they can start renegotiating their cable contracts, they might look to just stream the network?

I also wonder if this applies to existing high profile CNN talent. Anderson Cooper's "Full Circle" online show has been running for a while, I would expect that to be included on CNN+. It would be a tougher product to sell if they have to bring in new talent for the streaming service.

I don't see CNN+ being the nail in the coffin for CNNI. It just reflects the day and age we live in, and like any business in the entertainment world, CNN needs to adapt or get left in the dust.

It would be a tougher product to sell if they have to bring in new talent for the streaming service.

I’m wondering the opposite; if they’d have more success selling this as a new, less politics driven, slice of CNN (i.e. the direction HLN was heading until they cancelled Costello, Pereira, Hill, and Banfield).

I’m also curious how they’ll define a “successful” service. No doubt they’ll put together some great programming at first, it’s only a matter of time until we find out if it’s good enough to balance the books.

I also don’t think this can stand alone and fully expect some integration with HBO Max and Discovery+ after the merger.

I got this story from the RTÉ News app in Ireland this evening. It has reported that the global rollout of CNN+ won't happen until early 2023. CNN+ will be serving the U.S market for a year until it rolls out worldwide a year later.

It was only going to be a matter of time before Julia Chatterly ended up anchoring on domestic. Currently on Early Start covering Christine Romans. Personal choice of course, but I really don't see the appeal in her whatsoever. There are so many anchors who could be utilised, such as the bank of international anchors with barely any work down in Atlantic.

Julia has covered Early Start before, although it was quite a while ago.
Julia would have been going into work at the New York studios today for First Move anyway. It probably just makes more logistical sense at this time for the company to get Julia to start her shift a few hours earlier, instead of setting up and staffing a studio in another city and involving another anchor when Julia is already right there and more than capable.

Which sums up CNNI’s status within CNN quite well - a presenter is pulled off their own show to cover the lowest profile of all the CNN Domestic programmes.

I’m sceptical over CNN+. It’s true that the future of broadcasting is very much streaming but not sure if something like CNN really works for streaming.
CNN’s ratings aren’t normally good anyway so add in an extra charge and figures will likely be a fraction of even that.

Also there’s such a volume of streaming services and I do wonder how many would choose CNN+ over say Netflix, Amazon Prime or Disney+. And even if somebody was a news junkie there are better free providers like BBC or Al Jazeera and if you wanted to pay for news you’d surely pay for something like New York Times or The Economist who provide far better and far more breadth of news coverage than CNN does.
CNN+ seems like it might work far better being ‘added onto’ an existing streaming platform rather than trying to do its own streaming platform.

Which makes total sense when you consider AT&T is spinning off WarnerMedia in a merger with Discovery. This news is probably timed so that it works in AT&Ts favor. 100% see this being merged with Discovery+

I think CNN should have just made a live stream like CBSN, NBC NEWS NOW, etc.. no pay service. Have a news based service on the cheap like CBSN, maybe in the AM simulcast Morning Express with Robin Meade, then have a news wheel format, with one anchor from Atlanta live at 12pm , then update with a different anchor in a few hours and an evening anchor (maybe use a CNNI anchor in Atlanta somewhere) same on weekends. A basic service for people who want news without the opinions and pundits. I'm surprised they didn't jump into that after its seemed to work for NBC, CBS, and ABC.

With CNN Plus, it's a little strange that they want to make this standalone service, but I'm not sure what the appeal for it would be compared to say Fox Nation, which is trying to provide more content to FOX News fans, but they also include life style shows, original movies, true crime shows etc.. I'm not sure what CNN Plus could offer that would be worth money, CNN Originals are already on HBO Max, if the Discovery purchase goes through, Discovery already has life style brands to pitch on Discovery Plus. If CNN Plus is a basic streaming news like I mentioned above but paying, then a viewer could just get NBC News Now or Newsy for free.

I wonder if they will be moving stuff to this that they have on CNN.com currently for free like "Anderson Cooper Full Circle".

It feels like CNN is resisting a move into free streaming like ABC, CBS and NBC have done. To be fair, it's a crowded market nowadays.

I'd have loved to have seen them take the perpetually identity crisis-ridden HLN off cable and return it to its roots as a no-nonsense rolling news service, available for free online.

It's clear from their plans that they want to go in completely the opposite direction, though - in-depth subscription content.

To be fair, it's a crowded market nowadays.

I think that's exactly the point. There's not much money to be made from a free headline news service. (And it's not as if there's a large audience willing to pay for an equivalent subscription service, given the free streaming services from the broadcast networks!)

The challenge for CNN is coming up with a product that is distinct from CNN TV, but which households consider is worth dipping into their wallets for, AND which doesn't cost the earth to set up and run. I don't know that any news outlet has cracked that model yet. One can only hope that there is a commercially viable model waiting to be found.

I’m sure a few of you would be interested in this profile piece on Bianca Nobilo from “Woman Magazine New Zealand”. She posted about it on Instagram and I’ve tracked it down.

A great read, she is a talented journalist and broadcaster. It does imply she has her own show, which was true pre-pandemic but not anymore unless they’re planning on bringing it back.

I like her description of her interviews style - not as aggressive as some of her colleagues, but quieter, lulling them into a false sense of security. For a politician that’s a terrifying approach.
