Well try and recreate it that accurately in Excel and we'll see if you have a point. Of course, given that the letters are bespokely drawn you will have a bit of a problem there. I can't be bothered frankly - but if the criticism is that the logo is merely single characters positioned centrally within equally sized squares then I don't really think either logo can really claim to be any different in that regard, tweaked glyphs or no.

But that's not the point. The fact that the new logo can be accurately replicated in under five minutes in Excel - even with Excel's poor alignment within cells - shows how little thought has gone into the new logo.
MLN's logo was designed over multiple revisions - with the characters being repeatedly tweaked and realigned (they aren't entirely central to the blocks) to create a version that was optimally spaced and worked across multiple mediums and alongside other branding. MLN's blocks also aren't perfectly square as he was aware that perfect squares can look too narrow on screen.
The design of the 1997 blocks was a lengthy and considered process, the new logo looks like it was slapped together in an afternoon with a 'that'll do' attitude - seemingly the same attitude that BBC Creative had with their last major project, the oneness idents.

It’s not been designed internally.

Well that is much worse, somebody definitely saw the BBC coming.

I sure hope so as it’s a great look if that’s the route they’re going down! I’m interested to see how they translate this into the channel branding such as BBC One etc.
I just think the three columns thing works so well across all platforms and even landscape/portrait which I do think is the big battle/challenge in design in the 2020s.
I agree! It’s a simple and subtle hark-back to the BBC blocks no matter the format or media it’s displayed on. It’s definitely a challenge to carry design across a range of devices today. We still consume content on widescreen TV’s but an increasing amount of content is delivered through smartphones so any design that meets the demands of those scenarios is great!
To be honest I’ve warmed to the new blocks over time. I don’t find them as offensive as others do here and I welcome a change in branding that has become very stale over the past 10 or so years.

Why would they do that? It should never be about the rebrand as far as companies are concerned, it's about the product. Most people also don't care two hoots about rebrands - especially one like this where 99% of people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the two sets of blocks.
It's a bit like the new Cadbury logo. Most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference, and Cadbury didn't make a fuss about revealing it, instead gradually phasing it in on various products. Sound familiar!?

Notably, they didn't decide to type out the logo in the font they've used for the product names and leave it at that.
We are talking about the BBC that used Gill Sans for headlines, titles and body copy too. Some brands like Cadbury wouldn’t use their logo type for standard text in their marketing materials but I do know many that do and there isn’t necessarily a problem with that as long as it is appropriate to do so.

And the letters were custom-drawn for the logo, which was my point - that may not have come across clearly enough.
Still based on/basically Gill Sans…

Yes, and that's not a problem. Who said it was?
Absolutely nothing. You just mentioned in your point earlier about Cadbury not using their product font for their updated logo - I was just stating that the BBC did that with Gill sans just as they are now doing with Reith.

Seen a possible preview of some of the changes that are coming in a recent survey. Can't post what was seen but to summarise... think three squares that can animate into three rectangles and move into different layouts and colours
All could change between now and the autumn though so what I saw may not actually be the final product. However, logo looked a lot better than I was expecting.
Did you see channel logos or just previews of what endboards/promo material might look like? And more importantly, did you take screenshots?

No screenshots as that would be in breach of the terms of the study. Focus was on branding of various core BBC services rather than what the channels may look like. Quite a lot of it looks familiar already if you've looked at elements of the BBC Select video earlier in this thread.
Roger Darthwell post_id=28581 time= user_id=1160 Wrote:Where did you found this survey, if I may ask?
Survey was one that randomly appeared on one of the many survey sites out there - e.g. you could be doing a survey on washing powder one minute and Netflix the next. Must have been selected at random so I'm afraid there isn't some magic link or sign up process somewhere if others want to look.

I'm not too worried about it working in the idents and presentation but it is the DOG and the avatars/icons where it'll likely be a problem and nowadays quite surprising it isn't designed with that in mind.
