I am sure Scott knows that his day will come to bid farewell and I am sure he has learnt from history of Radio 1, that it is much better to leave on your own accord, than be pushed out by management.
It'll be more than just ratings for Scott at Radio 1 the moment especially since there hasn't been a proper Rajar survey since the pandemic...! I think they are starting to report on that again soon though

I have been reading that the Global owned stations have been doing very well, especially Capital - Classic FM and Heart Radio, and also Bauer owned stations of Greatest Hits and Absolute.
I am glad to read the commercial stations are doing well - as Radio 1 and all of BBC Radio seem to have a sense of security due to their funding.

Over the course of the twelve months we will have lost Mistajam, Huw Stephens, Phil Taggart, Alice Levine, Dev, Annie Mac and now Nick Grimshaw from the station. The shift has also been quite piecemeal in nature; I seem to remember last year Alice announcing she was going, having her final show and then shortly after Dev announcing he was going too. She was then back on-air a few weeks later as a one-off for Dev's last weekend!
I do like Scott Mills but I am surprised he's not called it a day yet. He does seem to gradually be getting more Radio 2 cover though, including a weird period a few months back where he spent a week doing a morning shift on Radio 2 and then his normal afternoon shift on Radio 1! I guess he might be waiting for someone at R2 to go so he can make the jump?
As I think somebody else mentioned Dev's departure was only announced towards the end of last year at the same time as Phil Taggart & Huw Stephens. Alice's departure was announced during the summer around the same time as Maya Jama leaving the station.
I'm not surprised Scott is still on Radio 1 - his show is sounding as strong as it ever has and just as relevant to the Radio 1 audience as ever. The stand-outs on the station are very much his show, Jordan North and Greg James.
In fact, Scott is probably on longer than most other DJ across the week given he's got his usual show Monday-Thursday then the chart on Friday.
With hindsight it maybe shouldn't be such a shock Vick Hope and RMC have daytime slots from September. They were quite big external hires so there would've been some plans for them to get a bigger slot once they settled in. I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case with Maya Jama initially especially with how she was thrown onto Scott Mills's Friday show at first. However, turned out to be pretty awful and it did stick out like a shore thumb that she had 2 days on air and Jordan North who was far superior only had the one day - though that did mean Jordan was able to cover any and every slot annd build up a following that way.
Radio 1 I think sounds in a great place and am excited for the line-up come September. Those like Vick Hope & Jordan who have deserved bigger slots are getting them, the weaker daytime shows (Clara & Grimmy) are getting new presenters, Clara should be great in the main new music slot that Annie vacates, there's new faces coming through like Dean or Sarah Story and also promotions for talented DJs like Sian Eleri & Danny Howard.
Maya Jama was an interesting hire in that she was probably known by a section of the R1 audience through Stomzy so was obviously earmarked for big things. She ended up being under-utilised really, unlike others in the weekend lineup she rarely, if ever, covered other shows which is unusual and tends to indicate people aren't that long for the station. She definitely wasn't the greatest on air and made quite a few careless mistakes. I doubt she's bothered though she's gone on to bigger things and I think she's much better on TV than radio as can happen .
Similar things have happened in the past with just being known for one slot on a weekend - Jameela Jamil on the chart show is another that comes to mind.

Could you have imagined her doing a week’s cover on Early Breakfast?
She seemed to spend more time on her outfit that she would get papped in by the photographers outside Broadcasting House than planning her show.

Indeed it was pretty telling that normally you'll get Radio 1 DJs popping up on features done by other DJs e.g. Greg's Fact Controller or Everyone's Rubbish features or Matt & Mollie's 'Get Your Clips Out' game whereas you barely heard Maya outside her own show and not even much on big events like 'Hide & Seek' or 'Who Got Greg' which normally bring all the DJs together. By comparison even if I don't hear their actual shows too often I hear plenty of Arielle Free, Danny Howard and Charlie Hedges across the station popping up on people's shows.
Maybe it was Radio 1 not wanting to use Maya but I wouldn't be surprised if part of her not appearing outside her own show was her own choice. Indeed it was noticable that Mollie King who joined around the same time and was a bit of a celeb hire seemed to be much more involved on the station, do a lot more cover and quickly became part of the Radio 1 Family in a way Maya never did.

Yes I had reservations when Mollie King joined, as a Celeb hire and being parachuted into Matt’s show
But she’s worked really well, is a great double act with Matt and you often forget that she was a ‘celeb’

When Radio 1 first switched to the 3 day weekend I remember Maya spending the opening link on one of the first shows complaining about how tired she was after getting up for the show - which started at 10am. On a Friday. Not hugely relatable content on the office radio.
Agree that Molly has been a good addition to the station. The initial plan was to try Matt with a few co-hosts rotating but I only think one other host was tried before she came back and that was that.

Mollie appeared with Aled a good while back on The Surgery on a Sunday evening at least once, I do like Matt and Mollie but don't get to hear them as much now they are on in the afternoons.
I think Maya wasn't the greatest presenter at Radio 1 and like you say, she spent more time showing off her outfit then working on her show, lot of love for Jordan North down there though, even back back in 2019 before he went on I'm a celeb and rightly so, he is a really good presenter and all round nice guy.

Never had a problem with Maya, though she certainly has a face better suited to TV than radio. Jordan though has been the breakout star in recent years and I do wonder if pairing him up with Vick Hope in the drive time slot might be part of a succession plan for the breakfast show. Be interesting to see if they become him his main stand-ins. Matt and Mollie seem to have taken that role lately.

Indeed the initial plan was that Matt would have monthly co-hosts but Mollie was the first co-host and got great reviews straight off the bat and got given the full time co-presenting role pretty soon after. I think in the meantime they had Scarlett Mofatt and Example co-presenting with Matt Edmondson before Mollie started full-time.
I find I much prefer Matt Edmondson alongside Mollie compared to when he was solo - his solo shows did sometimes used to feel a bit too clever for their own good at times and as others have said he & Mollie have a good rapport and it's a fun programme where they take neither themselves or the show too seriously.
It is a bit of a 'sliding doors' thing but you do wonder if Matt Edmondson might've ended up on weekday daytimes if Mollie had maybe joined a year or two earlier.
Grimmy ended his final show with Talking Heads' This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody), what a way to end it, and good luck to whatever he will do

With the departures and holidays, I think they are a little short on DJs at the moment, so the extended shows are helping to cover the period between now and when the new shows launch. The schedule will be back to normal from the launch.
