The logo itself has never been the problem - it's the surrounding presentation that has been unimaginative. The notion of tweaking a timeless logo to make it 'modern' is such a shame. Because we know that modern can become old-fashioned in an instant.

Still, stranger things have happened. They have occasionally promoted live shows only with iPlayer branding.

Still, stranger things have happened. They have occasionally promoted live shows only with iPlayer branding. I suppose the flip side to that is we are effectively saying that 1 single brand is acceptable for iPlayer, or Netflix. I’m not saying we do away with channel names, just their branding. But I’m wary of disappearing down a rabbit hole with this as nothing suggests anything like this will happen.

Exactly. It is why the original logo works so well, it doesn't scream 'this logo was designed in 1997' and so possesses a timeless quality to it that a lot of other logos lack. One of the real weaknesses of ITV's branding over the last few decades has been their tendency to go for firmly 'of the moment' logos, which quickly look outdated when that style falls out of fashion. Reith Sans is so decidedly a 2010s Sans Serif font, it isn't difficult to imagine it looking out of place in just a few years time. It creates the very real possibility of the BBC ditching a perfectly fine logo for a crappy version of it that has a limited shelf life.

He was truly wicked, Brekkie - when you read about the type of "man" he was for the first time, your jaw drops in disgust.
You make a very valid comparison had someone with a similar background designed Arial or Calibri. Someone else earlier also drew a great comparison with Savile, Glitter, etc.
I love the font - still do. In an ideal world, I'd like it to stay for the sakes of continuity and style.
But there would be an inconsistency is getting rid of it and the Gill statue and renaming the Egton Wing of BBC Broadcasting House after John Peel.
That said, I could spend all day pointing out inconsistencies in other's arguments on the subject when I really don't have the answer myself to it.

The problem with rebranding with a logo that to most people looks exactly the same is, its going to be very hard to justify the expense of changing it everywhere, so for those of us who know it’s different we are going to end up with both logos in use for years.
Can you imagine signage at regional buildings being updated or indeed should they for such a small change?
It also wouldn’t surprise me if certain departments still use the old logo on screen, like when BBC News or BBC Sport design slides to advertise programmes and use a style that doesn’t match anything.

Funny thing is.....the BBC is already staunchly defending the new logo.....https://metro.co.uk/2021/07/05/bbc-defends-new-logo-costing-thousands-as-critics-think-it-looks-the-same-14873431/
In all honesty if this new logo had been introduced in 1997, and the 1997 one was being brought in to replace it now, the same people would be saying exactly the same things. They’re both just letters in boxes. The 1997 logo wasn’t some sort of timeless masterpiece, we’re all just used to it.

I thought this to start with, but actually the longevity and really the success of the current logo is down to the fact that it doesn't matter what direction the branding goes in - it's timeless, stylish and works regardless of what's around it. IMO the new logo has already come up short on that.
So I totally agree the context of the branding will be a test for this new logo, but I don't think that should need to be the case. I mostly agree, and somewhat disagree. I certainly agree to the extent that the logo must be able to stand on its own. And I think this new logo does that - it just looks slightly different to the existing logo, and therefore a bit strange to our eyes, having become so accustomed to the larger characters in Gill Sans.
I disagree in the somewhat narrow sense that if (in a kind of dream scenario) the new BBC logo launches with a new, coherent, well-received package of channel identities -- akin to what happened in 1997 -- then I think that will shape opinions around the new logo. Similarly (but on a smaller scale), if the new logo is launched with only a refreshed branding for BBC One (for example), and that BBC One branding becomes regarded as iconic, then I think that too would rub off positively on the overall BBC brand.
Put another way... If the current BBC logo had first seen the light of day with the launch of "Oneness", would people here still perceive the BBC logo as a strong, timeless brand? Or do people here have positive impressions of the current BBC logo because they associate it with a kind of golden-age of BBC presentation -- eg. the BBC One globe-balloon, the cream-and-red BBC News, etc.?
Doesn't surprise me - I had been anticipating this for ages, and my mind is just racing about it. I just wonder how they'll pursue each brand (particularly the channels and radio) with those blocks...

October is the month you’re after. Can’t say any more on the date.

Yeah, let's just hope they don't mess with the other brands like BBC Select was (at the time).

I know this may not seem necessary, but does anyone here think that in terms of the channels, they should have the names of their TV channels and brands (for example, "ONE" for BBC One) in place of the BBC lettering?
