Nick Grimshaw to leave Radio 1 after 14 years

I can't see him on Heart or Radio X, but Capital would be a good fit. Nothing suitable over at Bauer really, except for The Hits network and I can't see him taking that leap.

Radio 1 really have had something of a clear out over the past twelve months, haven't they?!

I do like Scott Mills but I am surprised he's not called it a day yet. He does seem to gradually be getting more Radio 2 cover though, including a weird period a few months back where he spent a week doing a morning shift on Radio 2 and then his normal afternoon shift on Radio 1! I guess he might be waiting for someone at R2 to go so he can make the jump?

He's got a regular gig on 5 Live too of course, but unless he goes down a more serious route there's not a lot of room for expanding his precense there

I think Scott Mills time on Radio 1 will end fairly shortly. If they are looking to refresh the schedules, he is now the stand out example that needs to be eased out. He is 47 years old, and way outside the key demographic age for Radio 1.

Greg James is fine, and I feel he will remain at breakfast for another 4 years probably, which would take him to his 40th birthday.

There's been a similar debate about Scott Mills on the other place and while at least one person thinks he should go on his age, the basic premise is that Scott is still delivering for his target audience on Radio 1 and shouldn't be pushed out on age and I agree with them.

It's not like Chris Moyles on Radio 1 where he was sounding more like a dad by the time he left the station or DLT who really did sound out of place on a station that was targeting the nation's youth.

Bringing in Chris Stark basically gave Scott Mills a new life on Radio 1. The post-lunch slot has generally always been a bit older than the shows around them - Mark and Lard stuck out like a saw thumb for a long while as something different.

He'd have been a good shout for Strictly It Takes Two actually.

Over the course of the twelve months we will have lost Mistajam, Huw Stephens, Phil Taggart, Alice Levine, Dev, Annie Mac and now Nick Grimshaw from the station. The shift has also been quite piecemeal in nature; I seem to remember last year Alice announcing she was going, having her final show and then shortly after Dev announcing he was going too. She was then back on-air a few weeks later as a one-off for Dev's last weekend!

Alice left in August and Dev went in December so more than a few weeks between the departures.

Radio 1 has been irrelevant and banal for years, there used to be real buzz to it back in the day (from my memory late 1980s up to the mid 1990s) from then it's a bit of a wasteland.

Just by chance, did your teenage years happen to end after the mid 1990s? Would possibly explain why you find it irrelevant these days.

it did, but the way we consume music started to change in this era as well - and I listened to R1 well into the late 1990s (probably gave up late 97ish - I did hear the announcement of Diana's accident on R1)- and by then we were getting iPods, Limewire, Napster, mp3 sites and broadband and that was the beginning of the end of it's relevance, in my opinion.

The thing is, back in the 80s/90s, getting played on Radio 1 mattered, the charts mattered - you looked forward to listening to it on Sunday, you had the Radio 1 / Top of the Pops simulcast, it created an energy and importance

Today, with streaming and all the other choices, getting your new tune played on Radio 1 is meaningless - I'm pretty sure most teenagers you see that are walking around with AirPods in aren't listening to Radio 1 - it will be their streaming service of choice.

There were presenters like Bates and DLT which should have been off the station by the late 80s, but in the early 90s as pop culture was changing, you still had those two characters who were still jocking as it's 1978, same for Adrian Juste. Radio 1 did reflect more of my teenage period once Bannister and Dann took over, especially when Chris Evans got breakfast and the music started to reflect the Britpop era rather than playing Aztec Camera.

I think nick grimshaw had the weekest show on the daytime lineup and it was right he went. I think Scott's show is the best he and Chris are very funny together. I think radio 1 should let them decide when they want to leave and when they do leave I think they should take a daily show on another station probably 5live where they already do a Saturday show

It will come down to ratings with Scott's show - as long as he continues to pull in a decent figure, he will be safe on Radio 1 for a year or two at least.

I am sure Scott knows that his day will come to bid farewell and I am sure he has learnt from history of Radio 1, that it is much better to leave on your own accord, than be pushed out by management.

His show was also carried on R2 FM up until the end of the 80s, and was arguably more suited to their output in that era

There were two Radio 1s 70s and 80s.There was the end of the pier pop and prattle stuff, and the specialist/rockumentary stuff.

The latter programmes seemed to be generally the ones that Radio 1 were allowed to borrow the R2 FM network for.

I never bothered with the downmarket bit of Radio 1, it was AM only, and lousy reception.

When it got its own FM network it didn't alter my listening pattern at all, it just highlighted how awful the daytime stuff was
