I would have thought that. Sometime around 2009/10 the head of BBC Property services was seen at Kent House and the inevitable rumour was that the BBC TV centre was going to be refurbished by a joint consortium of ITV/BBC with both ending up there. It would have been a sensible solution for both broadcasters. Ho hum.

They're not, BH has been at most half of its full capacity over the last 18 months, the Broadcast Centre has been even emptier.

Like a lot of businesses they've discovered that a lot of their work can be done perfectly well from home and a lot of their staff are quite happy working from home. Things won't be returning back to the old way of working.

The idea I believe is to move to the option of 2 or 3 days in the office a week with the rest of the time working from home. That substantially reduces the amount of office space needed, hence the move of the remaining staff from W12

I was more referring to pre-Covid times, given how many departments got moved out of W12 into NBH around 2013/14

Well yes, but they're leaving the Broadcast Centre in post Covid times

Is the Broadcast Centre where the One Show used to come from?

Media Village, round the corner

No, it came from Energy Centre.

I do wonder if the developers have regrets in not saving one more television studio at Television Centre? I read that in their original plan, TC4 would have been kept, but money came into it, and the studio was lost in the redevelopment.

If there had have been another large studio, I bet BBC Studioworks would have made a lot of profit out of it, considering ITV daytime now use TC2 daily and have permanent sets built into TC3, meaning in effect two studios out of commission for other productions - although TC2 is more flexible.

I suspect Studioworks can't believe their luck. People were predicting that TC2 was the wrong size and would struggle to attract bookings but here they are with a block booking from ITV which surely reduces the admin overhead too.
Write that down in your copybook now

The Media Village referred to the whole development.

The One Show cane from The Energy Centre, which was next door to the Broadcast Centre, same lobby but turn right rather than left.

The BBC still have some technical/operational facilities in the Energy Centre which I'm sure will remain there for now - presumably they'll be the only BBC prescense there

I doubt the developers regret not having kept TC4, it would have made the layout of their development more awkward for a start - there's a walkway through where it was and the stairs/lifts for the flats would be the wrong side of the studio. Because of the original design it's the natural place to have the division between studios and flats/hotel

I doubt the income from the flats that replaced TC4 would have been less than the extra lease income from the BBC for a studio instead. Having studios on site isn't an advantage for them at all

Yes, as far as most people are concerned, the Broadcast Centre and Energy Centre are the same place, they share a reception and atrium. You can see that here.

Energy Centre on the left as we look at it, Broadcast Centre on the right.

I need to find another Coco di Mama...

That's right, the BBC will remain in the Energy Centre and Red Bee will continue to be in the Broadcast Centre as well. Think there'll be some remaining floorspace in BC on one of the non-ITV floors (where BBC Creative currently are I think?) that will go to someone else as well.
