I like the new interview/coffee lounge used by correspondents to interview guests. The backround colour is more blue than teal which i much prefer.

That's been in use for quite a while. They did interviews behind the scenes for the 2019 election there.

I think it's primary use is for podcasting and online content.


I agree though. It does look very nice, especially the glass behind the main sofa.
I think the cube graphics might look quite good if the Evening news ever wants to change their titles to help differentiate their programme.

Presenting the news outdoors will give ITV News the chance to test and install a new studio design if they are thinking of bringing in a new look to their current presentation, which has been used since January 2013, and that is a very long time for ITV News to use a set of presentation. 8 years is a long time without a refresh to the set, music etc.

This isn’t right. An OB will still require the gallery. Although there is the option to decamp to PCR2, testing a new studio design is the last thing they’d want to do when presenting from location in a pandemic.

I think it's about time that ITV News updated their whole look. It definitely feels stale now. In fact, I would go so far as to say that BBC, ITV and Channel 4 News all need to update their studios and looks a lot more now than ever before. None of the major networks look that good anymore, and Channel 4 News have done little with their studio since 1999, and that look now is really starting to grate on me. I would also suggest that ITV News needs to return to having physical sets, the whole virtual set thing now feels very tired, and maybe a physical set with virtual elements would work better.

True, but most outlets have gone a considerably long time now without changing anything, especially in the modern era. BBC News has effectively been tweaking the same designs since 2008 and ITV News since 2013. And, as [mention]cityprod[/mention] said, Channel 4 News, despite some tweaks along the way, has effectively been the same since 1999! I totally get the need for brand identity but it does feel like quite a long time since the TV Pres community has had something major TV news-related to get excited about. Whilst the current ITV News branding is quite solid, it does feel the stalest now as there have been almost no tweaks whatsoever in 8+ years. Personally, I would like to see it overhauled again soon.

I think ITV’s current look still looks pretty good and modern considering it’s age. I can’t imagine they’ll go back to a physical set as it’s a lot more restrictive than what they use now.

What goes into a tweak or update? Is it higher ups deciding they want to keep it fresh, or are there focus groups or surveys about the look of a programme.

I've never met anyone outside of being geeks like us here who give a hoot what the graphics look like.

Back in 2009, A flood caused Channel 4 News (at Noon) to be hosted from the newsroom, and in my opinion it worked well, and if C4 News ever dropped the studio they are in now, it would look very nice.

I actually quite like Channel 4's set, despite it's long life, and it still looks fresh 22 years on.

BBC's was excellent at the time but I feel it is indeed getting old, but I think that might be because the branding that accompanies it is 13 years old this month!

ITV really needs to have a news overhaul though, the current studio & graphics has been around for 8 years and seem really stale nowadays. I think it is time for them to return to physical sets (or physical with virtual elements).

Looking at many other news studios in Europe, specifically German studios & the new looks for TV Avisen and Het Journall, ITV seems really behind the times.

The German virtual studios generally look awful - ITV have realised just because you can doesn't mean you should when it comes to exploiting what a VR studio can offer.

Agree, ITV News still looks great & is one of the best uses of a VR studio around. You only have to look at stuff like ITV Hub’s I’m A Celeb spin off to see how badly it can end up.

Don't agree that the ITV studio looks stale at all. A huge bonus for a virtual set is the fact it's less likely to physically show signs of wear & tear compared to others, so it looks and feels fresher for longer. Now the regional sets with the awful screens, that's another matter.

Would love a virtual-physical hybrid, purely for no reason but my own geekiness, but keeping with the style they have right now because it is strong.

Err, that's why. The use of a virtual set for as long as ITV has used it, just feels so dated now. When you realise The Mandalorian was filmed using LCD screens for what would normally have been done as a green screen, the idea of green screen sets starts to feel outdated, like a piece of old technology that is starting to go past it's sell by date. A return to a more physical set, feels like it will be happening in the next few years. Indeed, the actual use of virtual sets in news is not that widespread, and physical set designs are still continuing to improve. Incorporating virtual elements into a physical set, feels like the next evolution in set design for news studios.

I’m disagreeing again.

Just look through the nostalgia thread to see how good things were. Each programme having its own identity, set, music (more or less).

The 2013 theme which is still rattling on like some record stuck is boring, old and done.

I can’t stomach watching ITV news. I loathe the green screen set up and always have.

Get back to basics and get into a newsroom.
