Coventry Cathedral: Building for a New Britain.

This 75 minute programme is stunning. Lots of Archive Material alongside newly taped video.

What's extraordinary is the way the 'old' 4:3 material has been edited in. Some 4:3 content has been shown traditionally with wings which have been tastefully decorated to frame the old video. Considerable elements though, and this is where the brilliance in my view occurs, were re edited across the 16:9 canvas using more than one element of the original tape/film across the screen. Other elements have been offset with tasteful graphic filler used.

The 4:3 content as a result is virtually masked throughout the production. Others could view and take the ideas on board for their own work.

A remarkable piece of work.

It is also devoid of any talking heads…… using voice over from those involved
And Few experts…..

Its use of a wide range archive material (including some recently discovered)
intercut with recently shot material is very good….
But the way it is presented adds to the story telling … by either a focus on the original
Or the comparison between the two shots on screen .

An extraordinary programme on an extraordinary building with an extraordinary mission and purpose.

They used similar techniques recently with a documentary about Ronnie Scott's club. I agree, brilliant and effective idea.

As someone with a lot of family from the Coventry area, and the history of the old cathedral's demise one of the stories my Grandad used to tell, this was a very interesting subject for me.
The programme was really captivating, and well made, really worth watching.
Well done all concerned with it.
