EBU announces Wintervision Song Contest for 2022
TODAY, 08:00 CEST
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has announced the introduction of the Wintervision Song Contest.
Sweden will host the inaugural Contest in Jukkasjärvi during December 2022.
Inspired partly by the Winter Olympics, the Wintervision Song Contest will take place once every two years and will be performed entirely on snow and ice.
Local authorities in the Kiruna Municipality will create a spectacular temporary open-air venue for the Contest, the Snow Globen Arena, which will seat up to 2,000 spectators against a backdrop of glistening ice forests, frolicking reindeer and, of course, the aurora borealis.

Excellent.
Hope they're able to (safely) do this; it will help the atmosphere in the hall immeasurably.
As much as we've all got used to seeing 'virtual audiences' over the past year (see the likes of Saturday Night Takeaway), it's no replacement for having a real, in-person, live audience to cheer on the acts in the venue.
"Good evening. Dull, grey, cold, miserable - and that's just me. The weather hasn't been great, either."

To give a bit more specificity to the news that people will be allowed to watch the show(s) live, it's just been mentioned in the news bulletin on Radio 2 that 3,500 people will be able to attend the contest in person - venue will be filled to half 'normal' capacity. All members of the audience will need to provide a negative COVID test to gain admission.

This video gives an insight into how the live-on-tape scenario is working, and how it's being kept fair. If you watched JESC last autumn you'll be familiar with the concept, but there's a bit more flexibility in stage set up etc. than the kids had.
As you know, for the first time since Vienna erstwhile SVT Big Dog Christer Björkman is not involved, however I'm delighted to reveal that his replacement is none other than Gordon Ramsay, who puts on a Dutch accent for the purposes of this VT. Enjoy.

The interval act has just been announced (or confirmed, as there were speculations); it will be a combination of a pre-recorded footage, filmed on the Erasmus bridge in Rotterdam and live music on stage. Glennis Grace, Afrojack and Wulf are the artists who will perform in the grand final on Saturday.

It's terribly sad news to hear that Eurovision Song Writer Shay Healy had died today after his long battle from Parkinson's Disease. I wonder will there be a official tribute to him during this year's ESC as he wrote the first of Johnny's Logan three winning songs What's Another Year in 1980.
RIP Shay

https://www.rte.ie/news/ireland/2021/041...hay-healy/ Doubt it - there was a small tribute to Lys Assia in 2018 but anything else is probably down to the local broadcaster. BBC Four ran a short tribute to Katie Boyle at the end of SF2, again in 2018.

And although Ola Melzig isn't involved this year, we do have a diary of sorts.

Thanks for sharing! I was looking for Ola’s diary and noticed that he is off with Christer Björkman to be involved with the American Song Contest later this year.

Yes - I spoke to Ola at the afterparty in Tel Aviv and he confirmed that was the plan and neither he not Christer wouldn't have worked on the 2020 production other than as consultants, irrespective of who took the trophy.
I met Christer in Lisbon, in the queue of the Burger King in the shopping mall next to the Altice Arena of all places, after Jury Semi 1 on the Monday night. Really nice guy and explained why the taping of SuRie's clip for the Big 5 Chat the following evening had gone a bit Pete Tong.

So three commentators for the semi finals, from London while Ken & Graham will be from Rotterdam.
Amanda Holden will be spokesperson this year.
Though spotted this earlier, so needless to say, she may not be a popular choice.

Three commentators for the semis is a bit much isn't it? But as I expected, semi commentary will come from London - which I totally get in the current climate. I assume they'll still be able to watch the dress rehearsal, albeit at the studio. Am I right in saying they use IMG?
Can't say I'm feeling that enamoured about Holden.
EDIT: The article implies Ken will be in Wogan House, not Rotterdam.
