For a few days after the BBC One regions launched on satellite they did all have DOGs with the full regional names. I think this was just for initial testing purposes. The problem was for regions with longer names like BBC One Yorkshire & Lincolnshire, the DOG stretched right to the middle of the screen.

There was also a BBC One HD DOG for a while. I’m not sure why it was removed, whether due to viewer complaints or maybe if it was just there to promote that they’d launched in HD, and they didn’t think there was a need to keep it long term.

I think the main problem with the early BBC One DOGs were that they were 4:3 safe zone centred instead of 16:9. As shown in this mocked up example using the full Yorks & Lincs appendage.

If memory serves, the BBC ONE HD DOG was removed due to viewer complaints, despite it being small, fairly transparent and tight into the corner of the screen.

Whilst I'm not a fan of on screen logos, if the BBC branded channels all had a logo that was like the BBC ONE HD logo I honestly wouldn't have minded. Instead over the years we got increasing sizes of bright and colourful graphics for the likes of BBC THREE. BBC FOUR's logo is very good too, almost as good as the BBC ONE HD logo was, but I guess with the rebrand they'll likely find a way of making it more prominent so the brightness or size will increase and it's gonna come out of its corner a little more.

Wasn't this during the period that certain regional news programmes were made available via the Red Button, a clunky interim solution before all the BBC1 regional variants were made available in full? I made a recording of Look North titles via the Red Button, and the DOG was as you describe. This was in 2002.

You’re probably right that there were DOGs during the limited red button regional news service. But there were also DOGs when the full selection of regions first became available on satellite for a day or two, and not just on regional programming.

Has anyone else noticed the new trailer advertising ‘Weekday Mornings on BBC one”? It seems very off current branding colour-wise anyway and ends with two (what look like) Reith Os coming bottom right and left of the screen… I might be reading too much into it.

I actually really liked the old BBC One HD BUG, not entirely sure why but I always found it quite nice and small and inoffensive.

If they do decide to reintroduce the DOG next year along with the English regional HD services then I'm not sure why they can't just use 'BBC ONE HD'.

I can't see why it would need to include the regional name, as many are quite long. Everyone knows which region they're in, and the channel name on DTT/DSat/DCab EPGs would already include the region.

However, having said that, ITV removed the regional names from their channels on EPGs many years ago.

I wonder it will be the preparation of rebrand? Because in the preparation of that big event, they will showcase some components of new look.

Anyway, let's hope they don't think this is now the time to introduce new on screen graphics.

I've seen that one, it's been on for at least a couple of weeks. The trailer mentions Crimewatch Live, Morning Live, Homes Under the Hammer, Rip Off Britain, and Defenders UK. Unfortunately it wasn't uploaded to the official BBC Youtube accounts.
