This Time with Alan Partridge

I’m not familiar with earlier Partridge stuff. I know the character and I’ve watched/listened to a few episodes.

I really like this show. There are unrealistic moments, but that’s fine – it’s a comedy. It’s not laugh out loud every minute, but that’s fine – not everything needs to be. Sometimes I feel we’ve lost the ability to think things are good (not the best thing ever) and for that to be okay. It’s a funny show, there are lots of subtle things. Compared to many US shows where every punchline seems to be explained (I exaggerate but only a touch) it’s nice to have something a bit more nuanced.

By the way, I’m not saying everybody has to find this funny, and if you don’t enjoy the show that’s healthy. It’s just that sometimes it feels as though everything needs to be at the extreme end of good for it to be worthy of being on TV.

While I prefer the KMKY and I'm Alan Partridge shows, I've also enjoyed the latter Partridge formats such as Scissored Isle and Mid Morning Matters because they're completely different to what the character was doing in the 90s.

This Time again is a different format, which I think for 90s Partridge fans find it hard to move on those really successful 90s formats, but there's elements of all the past Alan formats all rolled into one there. The random guests and gatecrashing are elements of KMKY, the documentary pieces are from Scissored Isle, the two-ways with Simon from Mid Morning Matters and of course Lynn from I'm Alan Partridge in the off-air scenes.

Agree with what you say about it featuring elements of all the previous projects. The make up lady and their interactions remind me of Jill and Alan’s relationship with Jill from Pear Tree Productions.

It's probably a bit picky of me to say so, but the one thing that keeps bugsgingme about This Time is the amount of editing. Given that the whole point is to be a parody of a live TV magazine show, I find it very distracting when the camera unrealistically cuts away to a high shot or when you can see that the characters aren't in the same position between cuts.

I have to admit that sometimes takes me out of the episode too. Although I suspect it's to do with the fact they record so much more material and have to cut it down. The same was the case for Knowing Me Knowing You which had some jarring cuts in places.

I’d never thought of it like that before but you’re right that it’s a mix of all previous partridge programmes. I do miss I’m Alan Partridge though which I feel was his best work.

A truly awesome carry over gag if that was the case. But for it to work, they needed to know that they were going to get the 9.30 weeknight slot in the schedule.

Not really, it would have been the other way round - they'd have taken advantage of the slot and put someone outside the doors just in case they used the live shot outside.

There were a couple of people outside but you'd struggle to recognise anyone it seems unlikely they did it
